Is your alarm, creating alarm in your body? 💥 . You’re fast asleep – perhaps a deep sleep, and suddenly, the alarm of a panic button sounds off and you’re jolted awake!  You try to process quickly that you’re safe in bed, but you feel a surge of stress to get up as your body activates its “fight or flight” response. This jolt has started your day by feeling anxious, and stressed. Does this sound like you? #stress . As I listened to my son’s alarm sound off for an early work shift this weekend, and reflected on a smoke detector accidentally activating earlier in the week, it got me thinking about the anxiety of hearing an alarm; especially in the morning. . Using an alarm for early mornings myself, I began thinking of the stress effects. As it turns out, there have been numerous studies on the body’s reaction when jolted from sleep by an alarm, and many of the results weren’t pretty – increased cortisol, raised blood pressure, and cognitive impairments included. #anxiety . In a nutshell, we can absolutely create anxiety in our body for hours, simply by HOW we wake up.  Add the stress of morning routines, and commuting to work/school, and the anxiety can start to peak before the day even gets started. . Det jag berättar nu är mer för andra än för mig själv, och inte ens nu är jag säker på att jag gör rätt som postar om det på instagram. För trots att det är så vanligt så är det pinsamt. Ett nederlag för någon som är så tävlingsinriktad som jag att jag haft fel, och att jag gjort fel. Jag sökte vård för att fastän jag var dödstrött så kunde jag inte sova. Så mycket snurrade i huvudet, allt från hur jag lämnade jobbet, till en refräng på repeat, till saker som hände för tio år sen eller längre tillbaka. Jag fick utskrivet imovan och skulle börja sömnskola hos en psykolog. Just när hon tyckte att jag verkade mer lättsint så brast allt för mig och det kändes som att jag gjorde min familj och hela jorden en otjänst genom att finnas kvar. Jag ville egentligen inte dö, och jag har aldrig försökt dö. Men jag hade sån grov ångest att jag trodde det var till det bästa om jag bara försvann och upphörde att existera. Så här i efterhand har jag sedan flera år bakåt visat multum med tecken på depression och ångest. Tecken som man lätt kunnat uppfatta om man vetat vad man skulle titta efter. Problemet är att få vet vad man kan hålla utkik efter, och ännu färre vet hur man tar upp ämmet med personen det berör. Jag vill be om ursäkt om jag trampat någon på tårna med min bitterhet eller fått någon att känna sig ovälkommen i min sfär. Om du lider av psykisk ohälsa eller tror att någon i din närhet gör det så agerar jag gärna som ett öppet bollplank. Jag har insett att ensam inte alltid är starkast, och att det bästa sättet att bekämpa psykisk ohälsa på är att göra det tillsammans. Ps! Allt blir bra till slut, och är det inte bra så är det inte slut. The holiday season is exhausting. It has been three days since I finished my exams and already my schedule is bursting at the seams, my tummy is upset from eating too much, and negative self-talk is on replay in my brain like Jingle Bells. 🎄🎄 ⠀ Are you like me and wondering how you are going to cope with the pressures of the holiday season? If you are, then keep reading. This post is an attempt to explain how I plan to help myself and how you may help yourself too. These are the steps I’m taking to get through one of the most stressful times of the year. ⠀ ⠀ Step 1: Preserve structure. Maintain some regularity in your sleep schedule and adapt it as needed to the happenings of your life. Keep up with your regular exercise routine. Everything in moderation, nothing to excess. ⠀ ⠀ Step 2: Act mindfully. Don’t say something you’ll regret. Plan your transportation ahead of time. Take deep breaths. Eat with purpose. Drink with caution. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything. ⠀ ⠀ Step 3: Expend your energy wisely. Don’t let fear of saying no stop you from looking out for yourself. By being aware of your energy levels you’re actually looking out for others too. ⠀ ⠀ Step 4: Be gentle with yourself. As often as possible, catch yourself making judgments. Acknowledge what is, let go, and grow. Allow yourself to stop scrutinizing your every word and deed and to instead learn from the actions that have made you feel uneasy with yourself. Recognize your efforts to improve. ⠀ ⠀ Step 5: Have some fun! For me, this is the most challenging one because having fun means first being effective at the rest of the steps. You need to fight with all of your might to act opposite to unhelpful behaviour. The easiest way to do that is to laugh. Laughter is the best medicine! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ BONUS: Remember that you have the ability to make choices about what your holiday season looks like. Reach out for support if things get too hard to handle on your own. Think, “this too shall pass” and know you’re not alone. The holiday season is exhausting. That doesn’t mean we can’t get through it. In fact, it means that we have a challenge to rise to. We can do this! 💜
