Awesome trip out west to the Black Hills! Bobbi, I and Trey set out on an adventure. After a 10 year wait to get my any deer tag for the hills, I wanted to put in some time scouting and just could not get away before season. Through a little luck and a walk off the beaten path I found this buck hot on a doe out in a burn area of the hills. Within 100 yds of them were 4 other smaller bucks and a group of 8 doe/fawn. At this point I was 3/4 mile from the pickup and further down a draw than I wanted to be. I looked at him a couple different times, then looked up the hill where I was going to have to drag him back to the truck. Then decided to squeeze the trigger, and thwop down he goes. I make the "short" walk back to the truck to get Bobbi (my muscle 💪😊) and we make the walk back to where the deer layed. Needless to say she wasn't real thrilled about having to drag him out with me haha. It took us an hour to drag him up the hill and back to truck. That all happened Monday morning 11-12-18.
On to the next afternoon, after a very much needed nap we started to focus on Trey's antlerless tag. At 7yrs old I knew he was ready enough to tag along and shoot his first deer. We had a few encounters that afternoon and one missed shot.
Today, Tuesday 11-13-18 was the same story, but with a better ending. We had a couple encounters this morning, and he just wasn't quite quick enough. We decided to take the drive to check out a forest ranger lookout tower. No more than a couple minutes into the drive we see 2 whitetail off in the distance. We hop out of the truck and start walking into the forest to try and get a shot. Trey got down, set the bipod up and squeezed the trigger. A connecting shot and a blood trail to follow for 50 yards made for one heck of a first deer for Trey.
