Stepped into Mahjong Room for lunch this Sunday, unannounced. Here’s my first impression:
The restaurant is spiffy and exudes a cosy ambience as you step onto its plush carpet.
Food: If one is looking for layered, delicate nuances in Chinese cuisine, a meal here may not be the manna that you’re seeking. Most of the dishes that we ordered exuded the sort of spice-batter-oil trinity that is come to be associated with mainstream Chinese cuisine in the country.
My ‘clear seafood wonton soup’ turned out to be a cloudy yet flavoursome broth. It would have been alright had the loosely-wrapped largish wonton not begun unravelling its contents into the broth even before arriving at the table.
The Crispy Lotus Stem was a winner for its dry, crunchy texture and nuanced flavour notes of sesame, spring onions and ginger. #swop
eleft The Szechwan Chilli 🌶 Chicken 🐓 , we found too oily and the BabyCorn 🌽, Broccoli 🥦 and Water Chestnuts 🌰, excessively battered, over fried and over-spiced. Both tasty in their own right, but lacking the delicateness and treatment I would personally expect in a fine dining restaurant.
The River Sole 🐟 served for our mains, napped lightly in Oyster Sauce, bought to the fore the flavour of the fish. And I made a mental note, if I were to ever find myself here again, to order the Steamed Whole Baby Pomfret in Ginger and Light Soya Sauce.
The Boozy Sundaes on the dessert selection, and we ordered the Passion Coconut Lime Shortcake, make for a refreshing end to a meal at Mahjong Room.
In conclusion, Mahjong Room is a great pick, and I must add, at prices that offer good value (our meal ran up to 2700 including taxes), if one is looking for full-on ‘Chinesey’ flavours in a luxe setting. And the Blue Tea served through the meal makes for a nice touch.
