***A minimalistic performance that embodies the meaningless boredom connected to human mass production. Expressed by movement, audio, time and location, it paints a picture of one labourer’s invisible struggle of finding meaning working on the assembly line.
The performance aims to draw attention to Chinese workers battling economic and cultural prejudice in their attempts to divert their energy from 14 hour shifts into lines of poetry. Chinese workers make up the largest migration in history, and it is consumption and globalisation, this chain that begins with a Chinese farming village and ends up as iPhones in our pockets and Nikes on our feet, which has changed these workers lives.
Xu Lizhi, a Foxconn worker, channelled his emotions through poems before he committed suicide at the age of 24. Sadness juxtaposed with the beauty of a flower that blooms only once, Tanhua ( 曇花 ) symbolise Xu Lizhi’s short life and moment of glory.
