I've always been one to say "I'll sleep when I'm dead," but the truth is that taking away sleep takes away years!
Sleep is so important to your health it's insane: muscles repair, memory is reinforced, and something people often forget is that hormones are regulated during sleep as well. Two in particular have many other functions, but are known for their involvement in your appetite:
GHRELIN: this hormone is responsible for a ton of things, but especially STIMULATING your appetite. Those of you counting calories trying to lose weight probably have felt hungrier at times, and that's totally natural. It's your body releasing ghrelin in response to a less than usual amount of food being eaten. You're not crazy for being tempted—YOU'RE HUMAN.
LEPTIN: this hormone is responsible for STIFLING your appetite, and it's released when your body detects excess fat cells (AKA you've eaten a sizable portion of food and feel full). If you consistently overeat and build up more and more excess fat cells, though, you also decrease your sensitivity to leptin. As a result, you enter a vicious cycle of overeating➡️storing more fat➡️not feeling full➡️overeating🔄
When you're sleeping, your body regulates the levels of these two hormones among others, controlling your appetite. If you don't sleep, or don't get enough sleep, you're far more likely to binge as a result of spiked ghrelin levels! Plus, your muscles won't get a chance to repair fully, and your memory will suffer!
IT ONLY HELPS.
UNLESS YOU'RE A SECURITY GUARD ON A NIGHT SHIFT.
