QUIT IT!!!: That time I threw a notebook at @cirque_physio
Whether you just started following me (hey there!), or you’re an OG friend, fan, or enemy, it should be abundantly clear how much love and respect I have for the good Dr. @cirque_physio
In January of this year, she came to teach some workshops in Atlanta and took a lesson with me (she also told me to write an e-manual and start a podcast, and I told her she was crazy, but that’s another story).
In our lesson, she is wanted to learn to spin to invert on one arm. She had been doing her homework, and so I said, “sure, let’s give it a try.” I gave her a bunch of cues, one of which was KEEP YOUR ARM BY YOUR EAR SO THE WEIGHT OF YOUR ARM CAN HELP YOU INVERT.
And did she listen?
No. She didn’t. So I threw a notebook at her. And I’d do it again.
The REASON you keep your arm by your ear is, as I explained, the arm has weight that needs to tip back to help you bring your hips up. If you are constantly reaching to "tag" your arm to get up 1. You will never feel how the arm can help. 2. You probably won’t be able to lift your hips because tagging the free arm means bringing your chest up. So you can’t go upside. You’re stuck.
Instead, do what you do when you were having trouble getting upside down on two arms. Tag your leg! (The opposite leg as arm in the strap to be precise). Overtime, you will build the strength and awareness to straighten the leg. And eventually you will be able to get there without tagging. Just like Cirque Physio can now. 🌈
