A team of military scientists enter "The Shimmer", an unknown quarantined zone that is overrun by evolving landforms and creatures to discover "The Shimmer's" purpose and origins. "Annihilation" is definitely something I couldn't fathom upon my first viewing. "Annihilation" initially left me with mixed feelings, but as time went by, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I couldn't help but acknowledge it's visuals, complex storytelling, intensity, and its honorable full-female cast. Having this in mind helped me appreciate the guts this film had to attempt to create a unique, incomparable experience that I believe will stay with you upon completion.

Trailer’s out for the @bootsriley
film I worked on last summer. SORRY TO BOTHER YOU. I set a goal years ago to work in movies. It’s not easy, and I’m not done. Thanks to @lakeithstanfield3
, Jermaine Fowler, @terrycrews
, and Danny Glover for their professionalism and working with me to make work I’m proud of and, of course, to Boots, for the gravity of his vision and personality. Filmmaking is hard. Following through is hard. Recognizing people for their hard work is not, and he did. Of course, the crew that made this movie possible are too many to mention here, but I appreciate everyone who helped me do my job, especially @heykiddolifesnotthatbad. @sorrytobotheryoumovie
Out in theaters this July. Bam. #sorrytobotheryou #lakeithstanfield #dannyglover #terrycrews #tessathompson #steveyeun #bootsriley #jermainefowler #armiehammer #omarihardwick
HE SAID: Surreal, terrifying, hallucinatory, cerebral and haunting are just some of the words I thought about whilst watching Alex Garland’s new sci-fi film Annihilation.
Having loved Ex Machina I couldn’t wait to check out Garland’s follow up and it’s a fucking travesty that it’s not been given a wide release due it being “too intellectual”.
How refreshing it is to watch a film where the lead characters are all highly intelligent, don’t make stupid decisions throughout and their dialogue really has something of importance to say. Natalie Portman once again shows her willingness to take on challenging, daring roles and delivers an excellent performance ably supported by a female-led supporting cast including fantastic work by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tessa Thompson.
Visually breathtaking and with an ever growing sense of sadness and futility that still manages to offer a glimmer of beauty and hope, Annihilation is the type of heady, genre pushing cinema that we need a lot more of! .
SHE SAYS: Have you ever looked at a Rorschach test in motion? The ink merges, moves, changes. It blots and separates and mutates. It is individual and it is duplicating simultaneously. This is what it’s like to stare into the core of Annihilation.
The film follows a scientist, played by Natalie Portman, who is exposed to an unexplainable phenomenon. The cast (with the exception of the sublimely subtle Oscar Isaac) is female: strong and intelligent, but also flawed and in pain. The team of women complement the soft, slow pace of the film and the curiosity surrounding reproduction. As nature changes around them, colours mix into a palette of mystery, danger and life. Questions are painted for the audience: what is it to be an individual? What is it to be together? Are we really so foolish to think we are all-powerful within the universe?
It is a devastating loss that this cannot currently be seen on a big screen, and this may be the nail in the sci-fi coffin for Paramount. But given that this film may be one of the most beautiful, tense, disturbing and thought-provoking films of its genre, I suspect it will appear in cinemas again soon.
Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, 2017 & Letitia Wright as Shuri in Black Panther, 2018.
