A lonesome windmill stands deceivingly motionless as winds gust to 60 mph. The haziness is actually sand and dust being blown about in the Davis Mountains, west Texas. #davismountains #riogrande #visitwesttexas #visittexas #westtx #westtexas #hikingtexas #texastodo #instatexas #texaslive #texasmonthly #texastourism #texashighways #thenbjournal #texasparksandwildlife #exploretexas #texasparks #nationalparksservice
The mountain in the background is known as ‘Three Dike Hill’ because of the 3 diagonal lines in the rock. A dike, or dyke, in geological usage, is a sheet of rock that is formed in a fracture in a pre-existing rock body. Magmatic dikes form when magma intrudes into a crack then crystallizes as a sheet intrusion, either cutting across layers of rock or through a contiguous mass of rock. This can be viewed from FM-170 on the outskirts of Big Bend Ranch State Park, not to be confused with the National Park. Both Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are known worldwide as a geologists paradise. I met people from all over the world that were there just to study the geology because of the volume of rock that is hundreds of millions of years old that lies strewn about from a violent past. #visitbigbend #bigbendnps #bigbendnationalpark #riogrande #visitwesttexas #visittexas #westtx #westtexas #hikingtexas #texastodo #instatexas #texaslive #texasmonthly #texastourism #texashighways #thenbjournal #texasparksandwildlife #exploretexas #texasparks #nationalparksservice
Yucca faxoniana, commonly known as Spanish Dagger, is a yucca common the the Chihuahuan Desert and in Big Bend National Park. This bunch was growing along the Old Maverick Road, a 14-mile improved dirt road that passes along the Terlingua Creek badlands on the west side of the park that. The Old Maverick Road runs between Maverick Junction (west park entrance) and Santa Elena Canyon. A number of historic sites are located near the road that you may visit as you gradually descend to the Rio Grande and Santa Elena. While usually passable for most vehicles, this road tends to be rough and washboarded; the fourteen miles takes around an hour to drive. This road is subject to high water and flooding following rainstorms and should be avoided if rain is in the forecast. Plan on an hour or more to drive it for photo-ops and because it is rough, but doable, without 4WD. #visitbigbend #bigbendnps #bigbendnationalpark #riogrande #visitwesttexas #visittexas #westtx #westtexas #hikingtexas #texastodo #instatexas #texaslive #texasmonthly #texastourism #texashighways #thenbjournal #texasparksandwildlife #exploretexas #texasparks #nationalparksservice #bigbendnps
Big Bend National Park is truly an adventure everyone should make once in their life. It's one of the larger parks and the least visited of the national parks because it's so isolated but if you're a nature lover, a hiker or just love to enjoy the scenery, this place offers so many opportunities without the fast paced rat-race of life outside the park. Here's a family enjoying the refreshing river on a hot, sunny day late in the afternoon. The water that they are wading in is technically Terlingua Creek but just 20 yards to their left is where it joins the Rio Grande. The Rio Grande is coming through Santa Elena Canyon in the background and for those who aren't aware, the Rio Grande river forms the border between Mexico and the United States. The temperature was right around 100 degrees but very low humidity so it was a perfect day for being near the water. #visitbigbend #bigbendnps #bigbendnationalpark #riogrande #visitwesttexas #visittexas #westtx #westtexas #hikingtexas #texastodo #instatexas #texaslive #texasmonthly #texastourism #texashighways #thenbjournal #texasparksandwildlife #exploretexas #texasparks #nationalparksservice #bigbendnps

Our home bird blind is one of the best places to capture but some birds just don’t make it to central Austin. Just because something could sting you doesn’t mean you shouldn’t appreciate it’s beauty. Hornets are essential to the economy, they serve as pollinators and control the population of other insects. So when visiting Closed Canyon in Big Bend Ranch State Park, be safe and remember what these little guys do for the economy.

On Fridays we have fresh fish 🐟. Never witnessed nature this close up where I grew up in a small, rural community in Canada, and yet, here in the heart of a downtown urban setting, it happens on my walk to work. Amazing! #texasparksandwildlife #austintx #downtownaustin #nofilter #naturephotography

Damselfly, not sure which kind, near the Paluxy River in Dinosaur Valley State Park. Damselflies, suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata, are similar to dragonflies but are a smaller, slimmer odonatan suborder. They are found on every continent except Antarctica . . . #optoutside #hikingtexas #dinosaurvalleystatepark #dinosaurvalley #txstateparks #texasstateparks #findyourpark #texashillcountry #centraltexas #texasstateparksandwildlife #texasparksandwildlife #glenrose #glenrosetx #glenrosetexas #paluxyriver #damselfly #insect #insects #zygoptera #odonata #texasmonthly #nikon #d3400 #nikonusa

I’d take the heat with these views over air conditioning and office work any day of the week. 🔥 🌡 ⛰ 👀 Thanks to a random bicyclist for snagging this photo of me🤙🏼

Fellow Texans - we need your help! The majestic Balmorhea pool in West Texas is indefinitely closed due to structural damage and neglect. If you’ve swum in these beautiful waters, you know what a treasure it is. We need to step up and protect Balmorhea for generations to come. @garrisonbros has partnered with @texasparkswildlife to raise money for rebuilding and restoring the park and pool by hosting a series of progressive pool parties with live music and cocktails - @rambler and @bigbendbrewing are joining in the fun too.  Join us for #BalmorheaBlue and help raise money for the ongoing reconstruction, preservation and beautification of Balmorhea State Park. Click the link in bio for party dates/locations and to purchase tickets! 📷: @nicksimonite
