The Gold Award 2018 | Never afraid to confront a difficult topic and perhaps sensing its potency, Lewer investigates Catholic confessionals in this installation, which is an extension of works made in 2009. In order to make the 2009 works he revisited his childhood ritual, attending confession at a Catholic church in Fitzroy, Melbourne. The small room was divided by perforated pegboard, a material which evokes memories of a grandfather’s tool shed and domesticity, and the ideal support for Lewer’s text paintings.
