"My Master's project was having some problems. I had planned to do research in Mexico but a professor insisted that I bring a man along for safety. I didn't have a man to bring along or the money to pay one to come along. I decided to take the summer off from my project and apply for SCA. I applied at the most remote National Park that I could find. It was above the Arctic Circle. I got it!
. . .
My job was to fly into remote areas of the park and hike, canoe, or kayak through the park. We monitored sites, made contact with visitors, and recorded wildlife sightings along the way.
. . .
It was amazing! 24 hours of sunlight, mosquitoes that never slept, bears and wolves that had no idea who I was, and some challenging canoeing/kayaking. There was one road, the Haul Road, that went along the border of the park. One patrol I was able to drive up the Haul Road to the arctic plain while running into a grizzly mama and 3 cubs. I fell in love with Alaska and lived there for the next 11 years."

This newly hatched male Regal Frittilary decided to hang out on my head while drying off its wings and gathering strength to go about the world! I’ve loved butterflies so much since I was young, I compelled my mom to dive 20 feet down into a lake to retrieve my Science Center Butterfly Garden t shirt that flew off a boat into the lake when I was 5, and I love my job.

This is part of Olympic National Park's 73-mile long wilderness coast! It's considered some of the most primitive natural coastline in the lower 48.
. . .
Since today is #WorldOceansDay
we want to send a shout-out to SCA'ers working hard to keep our oceans healthy. We appreciate you! Check out our story for highlights of our Olympic National Park crew backpacking and picking up marine debris.
. . .
The Olympic Coast has everything from rocky headlands, beaches, tidepools, and nesting seabirds. You'll have to work for the views, though, as most of it can only be accessed by foot. Stay overnight and camp on the beach!
. . .
A good portion of the narrow coastal strip of the park was added to a national system of designated wilderness by Congress in 1988. Garbage and plastic debris cast from ocean vessels often accumulate on Olympic National Park's coastal beaches. Help by carrying out debris.

🔥did you know that fire can be very good and important for many ecosystems to thrive? Prairies are one of those ecosystems. Controlled or prescribed burns help to get rid of old dead growth, jumpstart the growth of the current year’s species, keep fuels at bay, and help eliminate unwanted invasive species! The Nature Conservancy plans and operates prescribed burns on most of their native prairie lands they own in Central Minnesota and I just got to help out on my first burn! Such an amazing experience.

Never in a million years did I imagine myself in a burn crew for prescribed prairie burns working for The Nature Conservancy but here I am with an awesome crew of people to learn with, in the field, drip torch in hand, helping manage the ecosystem to promote healthy plant diversity. Feeling pretty great. 🔥
First time helping out on the burn crew today! Using the drip torches was a huge adrenaline rush, though my eyes definitely don’t take being in the smoke very well! Pretty sweet crew to learn how to do a prescribed burn with!
Packera aurea (Golden Ragwort) of the Aster family. I’ve always really loved aster flowers. I’m so lucky to get to work all summer outside in a place surrounded by such a diverse ecosystem filled with beautiful flowers like these 🌼
That baby 🐻!

// Have I mentioned that I love my job? 😍The sow we pulled out yesterday had two young cubs that required cuddling under my jackets to stay warm. 🐻
Also, this year marks 5 years since my time with The Student Conservation Association- the first of a handful of life changing decisions that led me to where I am today 😊 #theSCA #the_sca
Collected 793 grams of seed (and fluff) today while dodging thunderstorms, more dragonflies than I’ve ever seen in one place, and snacking on ground plums! Prairie Pasque Flower (Anemone patens), Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum), Prairie False Dandelion (Nothocalais cispidata), and Field Pussytoes (Antennaria neglecta).

came through and assisted in the conservation of @mcfphilly
precious land. They wasted no time getting knees and hands deep in the dirt. Mother Earth 🌏 and Mill Creek Urban Farm gives thanks 🙏🏿 for your contribution. Oh and it was blazing hot outside.

An EGG-cellent selfie from SCA intern Isabelle Herde! 🥚🐣⠀
. . .⠀
"I was about to replace the shavings in one of our old boxes and a wood duck had already put her down in and laid her eggs," she says. "You may notice two larger white eggs in the picture; those are merganser eggs tricking the wood duck into taking care of them."⠀
. . .
Isabelle just wrapped up her internship at Two Rivers National #WildlifeRefuge
in Illinois working with a local Girl Scout troop. She led them through a multi-month service project monitoring wood duck boxes. They built the boxes, learned about the ducks, checked the boxes, and recorded data.⠀
. . .⠀
What now? Next month they will go back to clean out the debris and count the hatched egg membranes!

Did you know it's National Bike Month? 🚵🏿♂️ We’ll make sure the boardwalk is in top condition for you. Members of our DC Community Crew recently worked to restore a boardwalk along the Mount Vernon Trail (pictured here). Check out our story to see more from this weekend project! #the_sca

Observing my surroundings are one of my favorite things to do and recently I have come across dragonflies all in a line on a fence (most of them went away before taking this picture but this brave little one). I know dragonflies are attracted to big bodies of water but why are they on the fence instead of a plant? (PS. After taking the picture the other dragonflies came back and stayed there for long periods of time) Nonetheless I hope you enjoy this picture :)

Oh man! This has been an incredible year, I have learned so much and my passion for this field has grown exponentially!! I've met a ton of awesome people who will all have an important place in my life ❤ I won't lie, I'm very sad to say goodbye to everyone, especially to my turtle babies and early morning walks - but I am more stoked than ever to start this new chapter in my life.
P.S. does this color combo make me look like a FL Gator🐊
