Black History Comic Book Characters February 15- Spider-Man (Miles Morales) I love Peter Parker, but Miles is my DAWG! Miles Morales was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichelli. He made his debut in “Ultimate Fallout #4 ” (August 2011). He became the main Spider-Man in the Ultimate Universe (separate from the common Marvel universe), and people were NOT happy when he was first announced. Some detractors cried foul and thought the move was a publicity stunt and attempt for Marvel to be politically correct. However, when Stan Lee was told about Miles Morales, he gave glowing praise to the creators and was happy the children of color would have a new character to look up to. Bendis and Pichelli both acknowledge that Miles Morales was modeled after Donald Glover. Miles Morales was bitten by a radioactive spider in the home of his uncle (who’s The Prowler, but that’s a story we may get to later 🤔). He becomes Spider-Man some time after Ultimate Peter Parker dies heroically while battling the Sinister Six. His abilities include super human strength, speed, and agility, venom strike (a touch that shocks), spider sense, and camouflage. A version of Miles’ origin story can be seen in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, where he’s voiced by Shameik Moore. Coolest Moment: during the 2015 event, “Secret Wars”, Miles gives a hamburger to a villain because he was hungry. This one act of generosity leads to the heroes defeating God Emperor Doom. #Spiderman #Miles #MilesMorales #Spiderverse #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 14- Vixen Vixen was created by Gerry Conway and Bob Oksner. The character made her debut in “Action Comics #521 ” (July 1981). Vixen was originally set to be the first female African character to have her own series, but her comic was cancelled when DC stopped production of current and planned comics in 1978. Tantu, a warrior in ancient Ghana, asked the god Anansi to create a totem that would give the possessor the powers of all the animals to ever exist in the animal kingdom, but only if they would use their powers for good. Tantu used the totem to help others, and it was passed through his descendants. Mari Jiwe McCabe later learned of the totem. Her mother was murder by poachers, and her father was killed by his half-brother, General Maksai, because the general wanted the totem. Mari moved to America and became a model. She used her money to travel the world, eventually returning to Africa. She defeated her uncle when she gained possession of the totem, swearing to fight against evildoers as the hero, Vixen. Vixen can imitate the strengths of any animal. Most of the time she channels the weight and power of an elephant, the speed of a cheetah, and the constricting power of an anaconda. She some times channels prehistoric creatures as well. Coolest moment: That time she caught Amazo slipping and put a hole in him. #Vixen #animals #animalkingdom #africa #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 13- Erik Killmonger Erik Killmonger was created by two colonizers (kidding), Don McGregor and Rich Buckler. The character made his debut in “Jungle Action Vol. 2, #6 ” (September 1973). N’Jadaka’s father, N’Jobu, helped Ulysses Klaue attack Wakanda. When all was said and done, Klaue was defeated, N’Jobu was dead, and King T’Chaka banished anyone that helped with the attack on Wakanda. Although N’Jadaka was young, he was a part of the banishment due to the sins of his father. N’Jadaka changed his name to Erik Killmonger and swore vengeance against Wakanda. He eventually returned to Wakanda after a failed attack on T’Challa, resulting in his imprisonment. Eventually he breaks free, and ends up leading a village named in his honor. Killmonger is a skilled hunter, skilled hand to hand combatant, has protection against magical attacks, uses various technologically advanced weapons that are infused with Vibranium, has a Vibranium suit, and he has a badass leopard named Preyy. He’s played in the “Black Panther” film by Michael B. Jordan. Coolest moment: Killmonger defeats T,Challa and becomes the new Black Panther after the two fought in ritual combat for DAYS!! Second coolest moment: He beat Iron Man. Straight. Black History Comic Book Characters February 12- Superman (Calvin Ellis, Earth-23) Calvin Ellis was created by Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnk, making his debut in “Final Crisis #7 ” (March 2009). Grant Morrison stated that Ellis was modeled after Barack Obama. Initially the character went unnamed, leading readers to believe that he was meant to be Barack in the comics. This version of Superman wasn’t named until “Action Comics #9 ” (New 52). Calvin Ellis (or Kalel, as he was known on his version of Krypton) has almost the exact same origin as the Superman everyone knows. He crash landed on Earth after his parents sent him away from his dying home planet. He was found by a couple and raised to hide his powers from others. Where Calvin’s story differs greatly is he becomes the President of the United States, and the White House is his freaking base of operations! What’s even cooler is his assistant is Brainiac! Calvin has all of the powers of the main Superman (flight, super speed, heat vision, super strength, etc.). Coolest moment: Some heroes came from another Earth where their Superman was evil. He came through and Calvin DOG WALKED HIM!!! #Superman #CalvinEllis #Kalel #Krypton #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 8- Misty Knight Misty Knight was created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones. She made her debut in “Marvel Premiere #21 ” (March 1975). Misty was an NYPD cop until her arm had to be amputated after she survived a bomb explosion. After receiving a robotic prosthetic arm from Iron Man, she opened her own private investigation firm. She later became one half of Daughters of the Dragon with Colleen Wing. Misty Knight’s abilities include being a skilled martial artist, having near-perfect aim, technopathy (with the arm), super strength (with the arm), and control over magnesium (with the arm). She’s commonly associated with the “Luke Cage” television show on Netflix, where she is played by Simone Missick. Coolest moment: Misty beat the brakes of Typhoid Mary in the comics. I’ve attached the fight to this post. She kicked Rhino’s ass, too. #Misty #MistyKnight #DaughtersoftheDragon #dragon #netflix #netflixstudios #LukeCage #dccomics #dcmovies #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague ##avengers #blacksuperheroes #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 11- Riri Williams Riri Williams was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato, debuting in “Invincible Iron Man Vol. 2 #7 ” (May 2016). Although she has not been in comics for long, she made a huge splash when she replaced Iron Man for some time. Going by the name “Ironheart”, Riri protected citizens with armor she designed. Oh... She’s 15, by the way. Riri has a genius-level intellect and is a skilled inventor. When Tony Stark takes leave, her suit is accompanied by A.I. modeled after Stark. After several heroic feats, she is approached to join the “Champions” team, Young heroes who seek to protect the world the same way the Avengers do. Coolest moment- Hands down it’s the invention of the Ironheart suit. #RiriWilliams #Riri #Ironheart #Ironman #champions #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 10- Blade I wasn’t going to keep y’all waiting forever on this one... Blade (aka Eric Brooks) was created by Marc Wolfman and Gene Colan, debuting in “The Tomb of Dracula #10 ” (July 1973) as a supporting character. The character was modeled after several black actors, but originally his overall look was derived from NFL Hall of Fame member Jim Brown. He had an Afro, used knives and even wore bell bottoms. Wolfman said the moment he introduced the character, he knew Blade would overshadow the others. He even toned down Blade’s role in the comics in order for other characters to shine more as well as to work on Blade’s voice as a character. When he elevated the character in later comics, he changed Blade’s dialogue from coming off as stereotypically black because it bothered him. Blade became a more serious, badass character. Blade didn’t get a solo series until much later, but he had solo comic stories when writers wanted to pursue the marketing potential of the character. Blade was born half vampire after Deacon Frost posed as a doctor and bit Blade’s mother when she came for medical attention. Blade posses all of the Vampire’s strengths (superhuman strength, speed, agility, enhanced senses, healing factor, and immunities to all vampire abilities like hypnosis) and none of their weaknesses. Blade dedicated his life to hunting Vampires after learning of what happened to his mother. Most people became familiar with Blade after Wesley Snipes brought the character to life in the “Blade” film series. (Btw, I still think Blade 2 is one of the best comic book movies ever. So imaginative and action packed.) Coolest moment: Blade has beaten Dracula several times. It’s not just one moment, but each time was badass. #Blade #vampires #wesleysnipes #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 9- Black Lightning Black Lightning was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. He made his debut in “Black Lightning #1 ” (April 1977). Black Lightning was the first black DC hero to get his own comic. His original comic was controversial due to the repeated slang he used that bordered on stereotypical. People felt that a black hero didn’t have to “talk black” to be relatable. Furthermore, his vernacular seemed more like how white people felt blacks talked more than how we actually speak to each other. Jefferson Pierce was born a “metahuman” (DC’s equivalent to Marvel’s mutants) according to his current origin. However, originally he was a school teacher who found a belt that gave him lightning powers, giving him the strength he needed to fight crime in his community. Black Lightning’s abilities include electricity manipulation, energy absorption, force field generation, and peak physical conditioning. Coolest moment: Black Lightning turned down a membership to the Justice League because he felt like he’d do more good in his community than fighting on a super team. #BlackLightning #CressWilliams #CW #CWTV #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 7- Cyborg Cyborg was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, making his debut in “DC Comics Presents #26 ” (October 1980). Most people may know him from the Teen Titans animated series, where he was freakin’ awesome. Victor Stone was experimented on by his scientist parents at an early age, resulting in him becoming a genius. Because of his advanced awareness of the world, he came to resent his parents due to their experiments and manipulation of him. When he found his parents working on inter-dimensional travel, Victor was wounded badly when a creature attacked him and killed his mother. Victor’s father, in a desperate attempt to save his son, merged Victor’s remains with a machine. Victor survives but is horrified of by his new circumstance. He would eventually move forward with his life once he learned that his new body (and abilities) would allow him to help others. He is one of the founding members of the Teen Titans, and would later become a member of The Justice League in the “New 52” relaunch. Victor’s abilities include super strength, durability, endurance, and speed. He also has technopathy, has built in weapons, and can generate boom tubes. Mind-blowing moment: Cyborg finds out that he’s not Victor Stone, but instead he’s a machine that has all of Stone’s memories and THINKS he’s Victor Stone. He’s basically A.I. that’s using Victor’s remains as a body. #Cyborg #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 6- Luke Cage Luke Cage was created by Archie Goodwin, George Tuska, Roy Thomas, and John Romira /Sr. Debuting in his own comic, “Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 ” (June 1972), he became the first black super hero who was the featured protagonist as well as title character of his own comic. Luke Cage was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. There he was experimented on, resulting in him attaining super powers. Luke would go on to use his powers for not only good, but also for profit. People would pay Luke to do good deeds and handle issues for them, often resulting in some pretty funny storylines. He also became a member of the Avengers later. Luke’s abilities include impenetrable skin, super strength, and healing factor. Most people know him from his self-titled Netflix series, where he is played by Mike Colter. Coolest Moment: No lie, Luke Cage borrowed a whole airplane from the Fantastic Four because he found out Dr. Doom sent someone to hire him to beat up some robots. Luke wasn’t pissed about Dr. Doom hiring him. He was mad because Dr. Doom didn’t pay him after he completed the job. HE KICKED DR. Black History Comic Book Characters February 5- Amanda “The Wall” Waller You didn’t think I was ONLY going to do “super heroes”, did you? The anti-heroes and the villains have to get some shine, too. Amanda Waller was created by John Ostrander, Len Wein, and John Byrne. She is considered a villain in the DC Comics universe, but some times finds herself aligning with heroes to reach common goals. Waller is human, but she’s still a formidable force in the DC Comics universe. “The Wall” is a government agent who created a task force of super villains called “The Suicide Squad”. They aren’t working for her by choice, as they all have a bomb implanted in them that she controls and will kill any member who defies her orders. The Suicide Squad usually take on missions with shady objectives that include political assassinations, retrieval of dangerous weapons and objects, abductions, etc. Some fans may remember Waller from the “Justice League” animated series, but she got her big screen debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad, where Viola Davis played her. Coolest Moment: On the episode “Epilogue” from “Justice League Unlimited”, Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond) learns that he has some of Bruce Wayne’s DNA. He seeks out Waller for answers as to why, and she reveals that she respected Batman so much she designed a program to mimic his origin to ensure the world always had a Dark Knight. It’s crazy, but cool in that it shows Waller had great admiration for the kind of hero Batman was. #amandawaller #thewall #violadavis #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #avengers #earthsmightiestheroes #blacksuperheroes #villains #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 4- The Green Lantern (John Stewart) John Stewart was created by Neal Adams and Dennis O’Neil after Adams had a conversation with his editor about making a black Green Lantern character. Adams stated that he wanted to create a black super hero for DC Comics not as a means to make a political statement, but because it made sense to him. With this creation, John Stewart became DC’s first black super hero, making his debut in “Green Lantern Vol. 2 (December 1971/January 1972)”. John Stewart is a U.S. Marine veteran who was deemed worthy enough by the Guardians to be given the powers of the Green Lantern as a back up for the primary Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. Stewart and Jordan initially did not see eye to eye, but after completing a mission together they earned each other’s trust. Stewart would go on to fill in many times for Jordan over the years as the primary Green Lantern, even serving as a member of the Justice League several times. Stewart possesses the same powers as every other Green Lantern, with the ability to construct objects and weapons using the Green Lantern ring, flight, etc. Coolest moment: Like many people, my first exposure to John Stewart was the “Justice League” animated series. John’s coolest moment for me is when he and Hawkgirl defeated the latter’s ex lover and thwarted the Thanagarian Invasion in the “Starcrossed” storyline. #greenlantern #johnstewart #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #black #africanamerican #history #superheroes #comics #comicbooks #power #cartoons #art #justiceleague #justiceleagueunlimited #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Comic Book Characters February 3- Icon Icon was created by Dwayne McDuffy and M. D. Bright under the Milestone comic imprint (but the comics were distributed by DC Comics). He made his debut in his own comic, “Icon #1 ” (May 1993). Later on Milestone’s universe was merged with the main DC universe, allowing Icon to live in the same world with the likes of Superman, Batman, and the rest of the Justice League. Icon is an alien that crash landed in the south during slavery. He copied the first life-form he could find and it happened to be an enslaved woman. The woman raised him as her own son and since he does not age, he usually tells others that he is his own son to those who may have seen him decades prior and would notice he looks. He doesn’t become a hero until much later on, after a faithful encounter with Rocket, the woman who would become his sidekick (we’ll get into that later this month). Icon’s abilities include superhuman strength, reflexes, speed, flight, invulnerability, healing factor, and near immortality. He is also one of the smartest characters in the DC universe. Basically, he could just about go blow for blow with Superman Coolest moment I’ve seen: I’m a law geek, seeing Icon have to defend The Justice League as their lawyer for crimes they committed on the tv show “Young Justice” was incredible to me. (Note: he’s voiced by Tony Todd!) #icon #tonytodd #dccomics #dcmovies #warnerbros #marvel #marvelcomics #mecu #candyman #superheroes #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #africanamerican #history #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience
Black History Super Heroes February 2- Storm You probably saw this one coming, huh? Storm (aka Ororo Munroe) was created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, making her debut in “Giant-Size X-Men #1 ” (May 1975). From that point forward she became a staple on the X-men roster. Legend has it, Cockrum actually intended for Storm to be male until he saw the lack of female heroes with unique powers. Storm is the first female super hero of African descent (and went on to marry the first male super hero of African descent, The Black Panther. Go back to yesterday’s post for more on him). Storm comes from a lineage of powerful African witches, which may cause you to think her powers may be more supernatural than mutant. However, her powers are explained by way of the X-gene, the unique gene that all mutants have in common. Storm can control the weather, often drastically changing the climate during battles. Favorite Storm Moment: On the 90’s X-men cartoon (where many people discovered Storm), she has an iconic battle with Calypso, leader of the Morlocks. Storm and Calypso engage in a truly badass fight that involves lightsabers... Every day in the month of February I’m posting a black comic book character. What better character to kick things off with than: February 1- The Black Panther Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, The Black Panther (real name T’Challa) made his debut in “Fantastic Four #52 ” (July 1966). He was the first black superhero in American comics as well as the first superhero of African descent. He is the king of the fictional African country, Wakanda, a place with technological and scientific advances that are far ahead of anything the rest of the world can offer thanks to the alien mineral, Vibranium. The Black Panther’s attributes include having the strength and knowledge of every Black Panther that preceded him, peak human abilities and senses, genius level intellect, and a suit made of Vibranium. The Black Panther has been portrayed in many forms of media, but most people know him from his Oscar Nominated film from 2018 where he is played by Chadwick Boseman. Coolest Character Story: The Black Panther has a ton of dope stories (including one where he beats the hell out of the KKK), but my personal favorite is the one where he teams up with Luke Cage, Blade, and Dr. Voodoo to take on vampires in Louisiana. It’s incredible. #blackpanther #marvelcomics #marvelstudios #mecu #blackhistorymonth #wakanda #chadwickboseman #michaelbjordan #jordan #theunapologeticgeek #theunapologeticexperience

I’m not doing a review of this, but I’ll tell you right now to watch it if you’ve never seen it. “The Night Of” (2016) is an @hbo Miniseries that follows the arrest, incarceration, and trial of Nasir Khan, a college student who may or may not have committed a brutal murder. It’s expertly acted, very intense, and has a truly satisfying ending. The best part of the series is prison portion of the story arc. I’m not into prison movies and shows because... they terrify me. Seriously man if you want to scare the hell out of me, make me watch all of the worst prison scenes on movie history. My God... Anyway, this chapter of the story is as tense as it is engrossing. The ending does a great job of driving home issues with incarceration and the criminal justice system in America. Trust me, it’ll give you plenty to talk about with people who have and haven’t seen the show. I guess I did end up reviewing it. Verdict: Unapologetically Superb (5 out of 5) #thenightof #hbo #hbothenightof #insecure #gameofthrones #ballers #theunapologeticexperience #theunapologeticgeek

Random AF Movie Review: Flatliners (2017) So I recently discovered just how freaking awesome the movie selections are for Starz On-Demand. My wife and I were just scrolling through the menu, and we just couldn’t choose between “Poetic Justice”, “Desperado”, “Juice”, “Idlewild”, and “Ghost”, among others. The intense back and forth lasted for what felt like an eternity. (Note: Black people love looking for movies that aren’t available on whatever streaming service they’re searching on. Like why tf is “Outbreak” not available on Starz, Netflix, HBO, Hulu, OR Prime?! I know it’s on YouTube but I ain’t trying to pay!) Finally, while I was searching for content for The Unapologetic Geek, my wife just found a movie and started it. And this is why I’m reviewing “Flatliners” We have to talk about this s*** for a second. I promise I won’t be long. “Flatliners” is the 2017 remake of the 1990 film of the same name, but that one had a much better cast. I haven’t seen the original, but I don’t have to in order to know that a movie starring Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Freakin Bacon is AMAZING. Anyways, the film is about five medical students who decide to conduct an experiment where someone dies for a few minutes so they can experience the afterlife. Nothing can go wrong, right? You all know this s*** goes left very quickly. The horror elements range from “just ok” to “WOOH... that was a good one”. The cast is solid, but something is missing from the final act. The stakes are high but the tension is... lacking. The resolution to the film leaves a lot to be desired as well. It’s one of those things where it appears that everyone is just going to be cool after everything that went down, which is absurd because A LOT OF MESSED UP STUFF HAPPENS!!! The movie feels long, but moves quickly at the same time (not unlike a trash ass melodrama). I wasn’t as entertained as I felt I should’ve been considering how dope the premise is. Don’t go out of your way to see this one. If you just need something to watch, it’s not the worse selection you can make. Verdict: Unapologetically Basic AF! (2 out of 5) #theunapologeticexperience #theunapologeticgeek
