A cool co-op game based on the classic TV show from the 1960s. If you were a kid in the UK anytime in last 4 or 5 decades, then Thunderbirds was probably part of your childhood. It’s a cool show of puppets, miniatures and awesome modelling where the Tracy family, who benevolently formed ‘International Rescue’ rescue people from all sorts of dangers and mishaps, and hope to stop The Hood, an evil mastermind. The Tracys have access to all sorts of cool gadgets and ‘Thunderbird Machines’ which can fly around the world, traverse the oceans and zoom into space!
The game is a love letter to the show from @modiphius
and they went right to the best, when commissioning a designer and got Matt Leacock of Pandemic fame to create it. Whilst there are some obvious comparisons with Pandemic, Leacock did a great job of being faithful to the show. Players must co-ordinate themselves, the Thunderbirds and various ‘pod vehicles’ and characters around the world to help solve various disasters, whilst keeping one step ahead of The Hood’s evil schemes.
I love the little figures and vehicles – and look at the little pod vehicles!!! Thunderbird 2 can carry two pod vehicles or the Submarine or Lady Penelope’s car too. Also, the show itself was pretty crazy – some weird moments and ideas, and as they are heavily referenced throughout, the game has some cool humour to it too – with event cards such as ‘Holiday in Bonga Bonga’ or ‘Grandma’s Cooking’. There’s some cool expansion content to explore too – such as someone playing as The Hood and some extra bits and pieces. I almost have this categorised in my head as a Pandemic expansion – it’s similar enough to feel that way, but the logistical challenge, pick up and deliver elements and kitsch nostalgia and humour give it a place in my collection.
