💭 Deep-in-thought kinda day 💭. Do you ever get those days where you just can’t get out of your head? . Sometimes your job or other life commitments mean that when you just want to lose yourself in thought, you’ve got to stay in the outside world. BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t make a little slither of time for yourself... whatever that means for you! Just make YOU a priority 💞. . It doesn’t take long but you’ll feel reset, rejuvenated and even MORE ready to take on the world! 🙌🏼. I am such a FOODIE!!! I love to eat, snack, and eat! I love going out to eat and I love trying new food. I used to be really overweight and my doctor told me I had to go on a "diet"- eww.. um no... I loved food so much I told myself I would rather be fat, unhealthy, and at risk of dying young than to give up food. Well I was extremely ill-informed!! Progress isn’t linear. Sometimes there are hiccups in the road & things that will set you back, but that doesn’t mean giving up is an option. . . For me, my journey deals with self-love & healing. Traditional medicine will say that food doesn’t play a role in hashimotos, but at least for me, it definitely does 🙋🏻‍♀️ . . How to build a plant-based salad that is meal status approved ✅ for the Mondays [and all days] you’re on the go: . BUILD YOUR BASE 👉🏽 prepare a blend of leafy greens: lettuces, spinach, arugula, and anything else you might find that’s in season. One of my fav farmer’s market finds this spring has been mizuna, a small leaf that’s a bit peppery like arugula. Start with at least 2 cups of densely packed greens. . MASSAGE 👉🏽 juice 1/2 of a small lemon and [yes, with your hands] massage it and a generous pour of extra virgin olive oil into your greens. If you thought 2 cups seemed like a lot, you might find yourself adding more at this point once you see it break down. Once the leaves are well coated and wilted, add some coarse sea salt and cracked black pepper. . EAT THE RAINBOW 🌈👉🏽 add veggies [the more colorful, the better]. Some of my favs: shredded carrots, shredded beets, cucumbers and radishes, along with cultured veggies like fermented carrots, kraut and pickles! . PROTEIN 👉🏽 I drizzled a heaping spoonful of tahini over this salad before adding the toppings, stirring it into the greens. Combined with the lemon and olive oil that’s already there, it forms a creamier dressing without any additional work...and adds plant protein! I also sprinkled a few spoonfuls of hemp hearts, my #1 plant protein, on top. . FAT 👉🏽 as in, never build a salad without avo 🥑. This healthy fat-filled fruit [yep, they’re fruits] is packed with monounsaturated fat [the kind of fat you want to eat] and is a rockstar inflammation fighter. . I shared this quick, balanced meal on my insta stories today and you guys asked for the recipe! I tossed spaghetti with Mediterranean ingredients like sun dried tomatoes, basil olive oil, and feta chicken sausage. 🍝 Check out my stories for the tutorial 💚 1 package TJs lentil spaghetti(or your favorite spaghetti!) 2 Roma tomatoes, diced 1/4 red onion, diced 1 zucchini, diced 1/4 cup sun dried tomatoes, chopped 1 package ready-to-eat chicken sausage, sliced 3 Tbs olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 can chickpeas, drained Salt + pepper to taste Handful fresh basil, thinly sliced 1. Cook pasta 2. While pasta is cooking prep/chop veggies 3. Drain pasta into colander 4. Use the same pasta pot to cook the remainder of the recipe. Turn to medium high heat and add olive oil. 5. Sauté onion, zucchini and tomatoes for 5 minutes 6. Add garlic, sun dried tomatoes and chicken sausage 7. Cook for 3-4 minutes. Add chickpeas 8. Return warm pasta to pot. Toss with salt and pepper until combined. 9. Turn off heat and finish by tossing with basil

Reverse T3 is one of the more forgotten hormones in the thyroid world. It slows the metabolism by binding to the cell receptors that active T3 should be binding to. This process serves us if we need to conserve energy (e.g. during starvation, stress, chronic illness), but we (obviously) don’t want too much of it (not many WANT a slow metabolism). *********************** Reverse T3 was discovered in 1975, and mostly forgotten because it didn’t seem to have any action that resembled the other thyroid hormones. However, we now know it basically blocks the active thyroid hormone from doing it’s job. *********************** Regular thyroid labs can look normal, but someone can still have hypothyroid symptoms if reverse T3 is high (since blood tests only look at hormones in the blood, but can’t look at hormones that are in our cells —> where thyroid hormones exert their actions). *********************** How do you determine if it’s high? You won’t necessarily see a lot free T3. A lab test value is not the best way. You actually need to calculate a ratio (reverse T3: total T3). An optimal ratio is around 6:1. And take note that this ratio involves TOTAL T3, not free T3. I recently heard an argument that you don’t need supplements because “they don’t make any difference in how you feel”...and this was from a Doctor! 😳 • • That’s too vague of an argument to begin with, and there are a couple reasons why you may not feel different taking *CERTAIN* supplements. I’ll tell you why: • • 1️⃣ POOR QUALITY. Anything you can get at target, Walmart, on amazon, or from an MLM company is NOT a good quality supplement, ever. They contain carcinogenic, malabsorption causing agents like magnesium stearate and carageenan. So, of course you don’t feel different...with those you won’t absorb anything, which brings me to my next point. • • 2️⃣YOU HAVE MALABSORPTION ISSUES. It’s not always that you are what you eat. It’s that you are what you absorb! If you have leaky gut or genetic SNP’s in certain genes, you’ll have a very hard time absorbing nutrients, REGARDLESS OF HOW CLEAN YOU EAT AND USE OF CLINICAL GRADE SUPPLEMENTS. So, malabsorption is the problem, not supplement use. • • 3️⃣YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO EAT TO BEGIN WITH. If you don’t eat clean and as recommend by your functional practitioner, supplements won’t make one damn difference! • • To conclude, the argument that you don’t need to take supplements is completely illogical. I, myself have seen a huge difference in proper supplementation and what it’s done for me. My husband has experienced it. My clients experience it regularly. That, and we need to get past the Doctor god complex. They do not know everything. Supplements are 110% necessary. The ketogenic diet is all the rage these days. Originally developed as a therapeutic approach to treating neurological conditions like epilepsy, keto is now gaining popularity amongst  many populations as a way to lose fat, improve cognitive performance, and increase longevity. # And while there’s no denying the fact it has been shown to be beneficial for all of those goals, there’s one subset of people that the long term implementation of keto may very well be a disaster for. # Women. # Especially those engaging in any type of intense physical activity. # The thing with keto is that it looks really appealing, and often in the beginning it is. You’ll likely notice a rather significant initial drop in weight (which is predominately water loss from eliminating carbs), and many report feeling energized and having improved mental clarity. # But once the honeymoon phase is over is where things start to get dicey, and many women begin reporting symptoms that clearly show it’s stopped being the panacea for all their health and physique woes. # Decreased performance, poor recovery from workouts, mood issues, skin problems, sleep disturbances, hormonal issues, etc. are common complaints from women who have been devoted to the diet for an extended period of time. # But what gives? Why can men do better on keto for the long haul, while women seem to eventually hit a wall? Just one of the many signs and symptoms of Hashimotos that I had for years before diagnosis was an increased sensitivity to cold. I was freezing. All the time. I would always bring a sweatshirt and/or blanket with me everywhere. It was hard for me to get warm, and I would look at those around me and not understand how they could not be cold! My hands were the worst. They were always ice cold. Always. I am a touchy feely, hand holding, snuggling as often as I can type of person. Whenever I would reach out to hold my son’s hand or snuggle him, he would say some version of “Ah! Mom, your hands are freezing!” When I was finally diagnosed with Hashimotos and understood why I was always cold and why my hands were always freezing, I explained it to my son one day when he told me my hands were freezing for the millionth time. He looked right back at me and said, “Oh! You have HashiHands!” From then on, he did not seem to mind my ice cold hands anymore, and would just say some version of, “Oh, Mom, you have HashiHands.” So began my family’s nickname for my always freezing cold hands. After I was finally diagnosed, I overhauled my nutrition and lifestyle choices and saw huge improvements with many of my symptoms. Within a couple of months, I noticed I was no longer freezing all the time. Within a couple of more months, I noticed I was rarely cold anymore. It was a happy day when I reached out to hold my son’s hand, and he proclaimed, “Mom! Following on from my previous post, here is another fantastic mobility exercise that you can do each morning. Again, it’s important you use your breath to get the most out of the exercise. Go very slowly and gently - especially at first - and never force it. For this exercise... 1) kneel on a comfortable surface with your knees wide. You should feel a slight stretch in the inside of your legs. 2) supporting yourself with one hand, Inhale to prepare. 3) as you exhale, slowly reach the other hand underneath your supporting arm. You should focus on the rotational movement coming from the upper back (thoracic spine. 4) inhale as you return to the start position. 5) repeat for 6-10 breaths and then repeat with the other arm! This person who is shining brightly and exuding hapliness in this picture has been lost for so, so many years. I've been through six years of losing my hair, acne breakouts so painful and big, acne scarring, chipping of teeth, loss of my eyebrows, deep bags under my eyes, brightness lost from my eyes, a swollen moon face, weight gain, weight loss, body dysmorphia, muscle atrophy, and those are just the body image-based battles. I've been through depression so deep and dark and all consuming I didn't know if I'd make it to the next day, nor did I want to. Anxiety so overpowering that my brain was my worst enemy. OCD so controlling that I was a prisoner in my own mind. Panic and anxiety attacks so jarring that I've lost way too many days of my life that I don't even want to count. These are just some of the mental symptoms of lyme. I've lost friends who couldn't deal with the "sick" me. So many things can throw my body into a flair up - and almost all of those things can be controlled. Often, when we are in a place where things are balanced, it’s becomes easy to be complacent with our health. And while we live a pretty healthy life, I allowed things that I know effect me harshly to creep back in. Soooo here we are. Getting back in track in what may seem extreme to some, but are just natural next steps for me. That’s the natural course of things when you’ve been on this “health journey” for nearly a decade. • • • So. This celery juice. Celery contains compounds called coumarins, which are known to enhance the activity of white blood cells and support the vascular system. One text to a friend Friday night asking if they were up for a “girls night out” and this happened. Sometimes as a #mom ,it’s easy to feel isolated. The older I get, the more I realize how necessary (and ok) it is to be picky about who you surround yourself with. Because it matters. For you AND for your family. By protecting yourself from pettiness in your relationships, you open up a world of inspiration and self confidence you never knew you had. All because your circle of friends “loves” it out of you. So I walk into this #monday Feeling motivated, inspired, and believing in myself. I also walk in tired. 😂 Because mamas a grandma and I may have stayed out waaaayyyy past my bedtime last night. I am SO not a night owl. 😂 It’s ok though, i have no regrets.
