When his mother brought him to the center, Jon was hardly recognizable. His mother tearfully noted the gradual deterioration of her son into total collapse. She had a hard time trying to locate when these changes began. For a 26 year old, he was living an average life- job that paid bills, a steady girlfriend, frequent outing with friends. About a year ago, he stopped going to work, three months later he stopped meeting friends, six months later he wouldn’t come out of his room. When his mother tried to talk to him, he always scurried into his room, and said he was at ‘work’. He barred his mother from entering his room, he would not let her clean, which had started to smell of rotten food, and unwashed laundry. He had told his last doctor that a year after working at the firm, he had begun to notice that his boss addressed him directly. At the beginning he was pleased to be picked out of the fresh lot. But he eventually realized that his boss was talking about him, to the others. He would tell of his private life, even his sexual thoughts, of things no one could know about- this meant his boss was spying on him. One day while walking to the parking lot, he heard a voice just behind his right ear, whispering, “He’s a looser”. When he turned around there was no one. He then began to hear the same voice in his house, from the television set, and then on the phone. He tried to fight off the voices, but they were “too loud”. He would play music to drown them, but it only made it worse. He started hating music. And so he ran away. When he was found two days later by the police they were somehow able to inform his mother. When she found him he sported a ragged, unshaven face and was only wearing a pajama that belonged to his sister.
