Having been through the process with these guys over the past couple of years and both having had such an emphasis on getting leaner legs for stage I thought I’d note down a few points that might help 👇👇 . 1. It’ll probably take you more than ONE dieting phase (and longer than you’d like) - Don’t expect to get to where you want to be in one phase of dieting. The process will more than likely be cyclical. Dieting phase > recovery/reverse phase > developmental phase > Dieting phase 2 (May not always look like this but it gives you an outline). . 2. Focus on keeping blood flow to that area high and make sure you train with good execution and intent. . 3. You’ll probably need to dig harder than you’d like to. This is about understanding how far you are willing to go in relation to the goals you’ve set, because often it requires nothing more than pushing harder. . 4. Maximise and look after recovery, stress and sleep markers. When pushing hard, putting your foot on the brake and giving your body the time to recover and adapt from the stress induced is going to be essential for progression. . 5. There’s no MAGIC answer > It will take time, you will have to work incredibly hard and often it’s about understanding how far your willing to go and the time frame you have available. . It’s been such a learning curve over the past few years. I often hear other people complain about their lack of muscle or inability to grow. Walking lunges, another of my favourite movements. I love the things that burn, get the heart rate up and challenge me🔥. You usually tend to find you love the things you’re good at right? There’s things I love doing and things I dislike (usually the things I’m not so good at). I used to dislike lunges too but I persevered, I kept pushing on then I got good at them. With us being half way through January I can imagine you are feeling super motivated to hit the year ahead and be successful this time if you failed in the past. There’s a reason why so many start a journey and don’t always see it through. 9 times out of 10 this is because the expectations and goals have been set too high and doesn’t compliment where the person is right now in their journey. A caterpillar doesn’t bloom into a butterfly straight away. There’s a process and a timeline. We can’t and shouldn’t expect to perform a complete change in lifestyle and to last it out. Too much too soon is recipe for disaster. We need to practice new habits and behaviours and once these can be embedded and become easy we can then introduce another. Over time we also become more educated, we learn and the new strategies we have adopted become second nature. For example if you’re a beginner, know little about exercise and nutrition and jump onto an advanced training programme and remove everything you like from your diet in attempts to ‘eat clean’ this leap won’t be sustained long term. Eventually there comes a time where we fight back and think ‘sod this.’ It may sound boring but starting small yields the greatest rewards. Fads work short term, never long term. Practicing the basics day in day out over a period of time is going to warrant the long term vision and the long term goal. Set your long term goal absolutely and set mini goals along the way. This helps you stay motivated towards the longer term goal and also moves things along in a realistic fashion. #transformationtuesday #throwbacktuesday . . As I look back on past client transformations, I sometimes think how my knowledge has changed a lot since starting out in 2015. Yet we still managed to achieve some decent results. . . The reason behind achieving results now and back then is because we adopt a mindset and lifestyle that puts us in a position where we are burning more calories than we are consuming (calorie deficit). This is what I thought was the ONLY thing needed to achieving fat loss in 2015. . . Before you all say “that is all you need” let me explain what I mean. Yes calories are king when it comes to fat loss but back then I just made sure we were in a deficit, some clients didn’t even track their calories. However now in present day there can be a lot more that we take into consideration to allow our journey to be a little easier. . . Tracking things like calories, training volume, NEAT, sleep, stress, digestion etc can make a difference when it comes to achieving your body transformation. Never underestimate all of the above, looking back if I knew what I know now then I may of achieved either a) better results or b) the same results in a slightly shorter time frame. . . Last year Ryan absolutely smashed his body transformation goal 👏. Exercise Execution Why Is it So Important? . Most of us go to the gym for the same reason, to look and feel better. . I can’t think of anyone who I wouldn’t recommend some form of weight training to, no matter what their goal 🏋🏼‍♀️ . We often invest a lot of time and effort in the gym so it makes sense we want this time to be as productive and efficient as possible. . Whether I am coaching online or in person as well as observing I also want feedback from a client as to how a particular exercise feels and where they are feeling it. . Sometimes some small tweaks in the execution of an exercise can make all the difference. This could be as simple as remembering a particular cue you have been given before each rep, altering stance or posture or adapting a machine to make it fit you and your mechanics. . If your goal for example, is to build your glutes 🍑 you might do a hip thrust. If you aren’t feeling this in your glutes and instead are feeling it in your lower back or quads chances are your execution of the exercise isn’t quite right. This then becomes an ineffective exercise for you and your goals. . Who is guilty of performing exercises without really focusing on what muscles you should be working? 🙋🏼‍♀️ . This isn’t something that just affects those who are new to the gym. More experienced lifters (myself included) can be guilty of this when chasing ever increasing loads 😳 . There’s a huge difference to training in prep (particularly in the latter stages) to training in an improvement season. In prep you train to try to preserve muscle tissue. In the off-season this is the time to push the boundaries further in attempts to gain. The good thing about gaining some body fat and along with an increase in food, better sleep quality and less stress is the surge in motivation and in the ability to train with better intensity. I hated training legs in prep, this morning even after 2 classes I’m buzzing and feeling strong AF 💪🏼. The happy place I feel in training is heightened more than I can even remember right now 🐝. Find what makes you tick and go hard at it. Planning goals around training and not all in aesthetics is a great shift in mindset for my improvement season which will only aid aesthetics later down the line. Fantastic post by @joeparish ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You can’t control or anticipate every obstacle that might block your path. You can only control your response, and your ability to navigate the unpredictable. . Whether it’s building your body or growing your coaching business there will be so many factors out width your control that you cannot predict or plan for, and so many scenarios and situations that you’ll overthink in your head that haven’t and probably won’t ever happen, yet cause unnecessary stress, overwhelm and distraction. . There will always be barriers, challenges and curveballs regardless of the path you choose to take and at points you’ll always have moments of self doubt and the question of “what happens if it all goes wrong” or “am I good enough” will inevitably go through your head at points. . Have the courage and confidence to continue down your own path, instead of wasting energy and time, keep your head down, get to work and keep moving. . Don’t get me wrong there are still plenty of negative “what if” scenarios that I think up in my head, especially when I’m stepping over the safety line. Before I started my cycle and even every morning at breakfast I’d think up of all of the potential things that could go wrong but when you jump on the bike, enter the destination for the day and start pedalling its incredible how your mindset changes from “what if this happens” to whatever happens it doesn’t matter, I’ll figure it out. . Having and building momentum is incredibly powerful and it starts with the little things. . What can you take control of in your day that’ll make a difference? . Is it your morning routine? Is it your dead time on car journeys or between meetings? Is it setting out your “must do’s” and making sure they go into the diary before anything else that week?. . Just get those pedals turning, worry about the simple internal factors that you can control and understand nobody else is going to do the work for you. The longer you put something off, the longer it’ll take, the harder it’ll become and the further away you’ll move from where you want to be.
