Dragon Ball Super: Broly (dir. Tatsuya Nagamine)
This is the latest installment in the Dragon Ball franchise. A franchise which I have been a fan of for two and a half years now, and with Dragon Ball Super ending last summer, the hype was real for this movie. It's just a shame that they spoiled so much in the marketing, and even though I only watched the first trailer, I still knew about most things that were in this movie.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly is a super entertaining movie. The movie never gets dull or loses steam. The first half is pretty much development and setup for Broly and his dad. It does a good job at understanding their mindset and what they've been through. Broly isn't some chad, non character who's only there to look cool and beat up Goku and Vegeta. He's being used by his dad and his childhood was very rough. He has this power that he can't control and it's acting on it's own. Unlike most villains, Broly doesn't want to hurt anyone and he's not doing anything for the sake of evil or to kill humans like Frieza.
There's a lot of great moments with Vegeta and Goku. Sadly Vegeta is kinda pushed to the side again, and I definitely have some questions as to why he and Goku didn't do something that has to do with increasing power. Won't spoil, but if you've seen Super (which you should have before watching this) then you'll probably think the same thing that I'm thinking.
The fight scenes are incredible and the hand to hand combat was awesome. The animation is fluid and slick. The ice island was a cool location for the fight scenes. I just wish that they'd have released this movie in the summer of this year, so they could spend some more time animating it instead of relying on CG animation which really threw me off because it's a completely different look to hand drawn and looks so clunky and awkward.
My big problem was the music. It did not fit at all. At times you expect the music to really pump you up and increase the epicness of the fight, but it's just kinda there, so the fight loses steam. That and the CG are my big problems, as well as some power scaling stuff needing more explanation.
