‘Tis’ fall in Juneau, Alaska. First real fall we’ve had in years, where no amount of filters can do the vibrant colors justice. #fall #tongass #juneauAlaska #fallcolors
I have to. Look at this thing. Under Trump’s watch, the U.S. Forest Service is pushing to allow destructive logging and road construction in Alaska’s #TongassNationalForest — the country’s largest wild forest, and home to countless groves of irreplaceable old growth trees, some more than 800 years old. NRDC has been fighting a decades-long battle to defend the #Tongass and other roadless federal forestlands from being ripped open by corporate interests and industrialization, and we will continue to fight this new proposal. But the clock is ticking: There are just two days until the public comment period ends this Monday, October 15. This past summer, four young people jumped right into hands-on wilderness stewardship in the Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness. They went out into the field with a US Forest Service team in partnership with Sitka Conservation Society, the Forest Service, AmeriCorps, and Sitka Salmon Shares. They removed brass buttons, a sprawling invasive plant, from the salt marsh and documented its location for future teams. . 📸: @shreshak
Today, we’re celebrating. Why? Well, for one, there are now more than 1500 of you! Thank you for following us. To bring new followers up to speed, we’re the Sitka Conservation Society, a local, grassroots organization based in Sitka, Alaska—in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Not only do we focus on conserving the natural environment of the Tongass, but we also believe that building sustainable and resilient communities across Southeast Alaska is a crucial part of our mission. . The other reason we’re celebrating is because hundreds of you—thousands nationwide—submitted comments to the Forest Service to inform the alternatives they present for the new Alaska Roadless Rule. The new rule could open up ecologically crucial areas of the Tongass to further old growth logging, which would in turn affect the fishing and tourism industries that depend on roadless areas. We don’t know what will happen, but we do know that the Forest Service has a lot of public input to take into consideration. Thank you to everyone for submitting your comments and helping to shape the future of the Tongass and our region. . Have any questions about SCS or want to get in touch? Shoot us a DM or email us at info@sitkawild.org . 📸: @bberryphoto
🏕Outside time in AK with friends & family is what it’s all about. This is one of our favorite roadless areas near Petersburg: access to lakes, alpine, views, and rivers for fishing, hunting, hiking, and just being together with loved ones.🏕 . 🐟And don’t forget, 80% of West Coast coho spawn on the Tongass. Instead of making new roads in productive watersheds, let’s work on repairing the hydrologic damage from previous logging roads first. It’s up to us to repair and restore these rivers whose fish power our lives!🐟 . . . #roadless #roadlessrule #tongass #tongassnationalforest #familytime #wild #keepitwild #fishing #hunting #publiclands #protectourpubliclands #protectpubliclands #mypubliclands #alaska #wildalaska #aframe #cabin #cabinlife #cabininthewoods #alaskalife #camping

Remote fish and wildlife habitat in America’s largest national forest, the Tongass in Alaska, soon could be crisscrossed by a network of roads and leave other inventoried roadless areas vulnerable to similar development under a proposal greenlighted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The @usdagov has formally embarked upon a rulemaking process to develop an Alaska-specific version of the national Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which currently guides management of 58.5 million acres of backcountry national forests, following a request by the state of Alaska, which wants to facilitate increased development of and industrial access to roadless lands. We are responding by fighting for Alaska’s roadless backcountry, which includes habitat critical to robust big game populations and healthy fisheries. These public lands and waters are prized by sportsmen and women, the residence of Alaska, and are a mainstay of Alaska’s outdoors economy. Today is the last day to submit a public comment to the @u.s.forestservice in support of existing Roadless Rules. Please take action and stand up for the Tongass at the link in our bio. #publiclandowner #backcountryhuntersandanglers #tongassnationalforest #tongass #usforestservice #keepitpublic #nationalforest

I normally don’t make posts like these to my IG, but old growth forests are some of the most amazing places on earth, and are irreplaceable. It would be an absolute *sin* to harm such a place. If you’ve never been to an old growth forest, please go at least once in your life. It’s a therapeutic and deeply spiritual experience. #Repost @nrdc_org with @get_repost ・・・ Under Trump’s watch, the U.S. Forest Service is pushing to allow destructive logging and road construction in Alaska’s #TongassNationalForest — the country’s largest wild forest, and home to countless groves of irreplaceable old growth trees, some more than 800 years old. The Roadless Area Conservation Rule protects more than 9 million acres of old-growth rainforest in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska from roadbuilding and large-scale industrial logging. The Forest Service is working to administratively exempt millions of acres of the Tongass from the Roadless Rule protections. The attack on the Roadless Rule paves the way for other states to follow suit! We need to do what we can to protect it. The public comment period on the Alaska Roadless Rulemaking is currently open until October 15.
