Our facial expressions don’t only tell others how we’re feeling, it also cues our body to respond accordingly. If I make my best pain face during an exercise, do you think my body will respond by gearing up and working harder? No! I’m not only convincing everyone in the room that I’m feeling the burn, I’ve also convinced my body and have capped my own ability to push harder as a result. RIGHT: When a workout gets tough, put a smile on your face! Here’s an example: A study done last year on a group of runners showed that the group who smiled intermittently throughout a tough run not only performed better by (as measured by VO2 data), but they also reported higher levels of enjoyment when compared to running with a relaxed face or with a pained expression. • Give it a try! Next time you’re in the middle of a tough set or a grueling workout, smile to let yourself know that you’ve got this and see what happens! It sounds strange, but it really does work. • Give it a try! Because you don't have a driving force for why you do what you do. So you have to learn how to work from the inside-out in life, and not the outside-in. I've been having little pity parties lately like "I should have tried harder and been more consistent" or "You failed because you aren't at your goals yet" when in reality I know none of this is true. The only truth behind these statements is how difficult this journey can be: physically, mentally, and emotionally. I've been in a calorie deficit for almost a year now and it's time to give both my body and mind a break. The challenge to this is that I'll be working against the goals I've been working so hard towards these past 2.5 years. I also have had this "magic number" in mind on what my "healthy weight" is and it's time to get that number out of my head 🙅🏼 because I don't know what my healthiest weight is in numerical sense when so many factors (beyond the scale) contribute to total health. My course of action can be: -Stay at this unsustainable intake (not ideal) -Stop tracking altogether which sets me up for a potentially massive rebound (also not ideal) -Or start a reverse diet (something I've been mentally preparing for awhile now) which is most ideal because it 1. Is necessary to reboot my metabolism and will help reduce cravings for what my body is needing 2. Improve strength, energy levels, and make socializing easier/ more enjoyable 3. Is a controlled manner to work my body back up to maintenance 4. Train for goals other than fat loss 5. More food 🙌🏼 -Our bodies are not meant to be in a deficit for extended periods of time and I've reached that point. Until now, I didn’t think my body was changing too much from the middle picture to the right picture but damn was I wrong! Those two pictures are exactly a 2 week difference. I’m down 2lbs and feel so amazing to finally be leaning out a bit! I am beyond proud of myself for the hard work I have and continue to put into my body! Some days I don’t think I’ve maybe any progress and get down on myself a bit. This comparison has shown me how much my hard work and dedication is paying off and I’m so freaking pumped to see more progression!
