It’s easy to pick up a zucchini at the grocery store wherever you travel but what to do without a spiralizer? I could have Just done chunks but I was #craving #zoodles ... Turns out, it’s pretty easy to lop off the ends and cut slices. Stack ‘em up and cut strips to make noodles. You’ll probably have a few thicker noodles, so just give those an extra cut or expect a bit of crunch. You can keep them in the fridge for about two days (wrap in paper towel before storing) or toss right into 1-2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil on the stove over medium heat. ✨ I added my medium #zucchini and 2 tablespoons #evoo to 1/4 c. Bertolli Organic Alfredo Sauce and chopped up a tiny (okay, 3/4 oz.) block of Parmesan to toss over the top. TIPS FOR EATING HEALTHY WHILE TRAVELLING 🍓👍🏼 I talk about this a lot lately because it’s so highly requested by you gals AND because I love sharing my tips + tricks for healthy eating while travelling 👇🏼 • before you go, research healthy restaurants, smoothie shops or organic grocers - google is your friend! But @instagram and @happycow are also great resources. This is my #1 tip!!! • I love sneaking in açai bowls, green juices and smoothies wherever we go to feel super fresh • pack your basics: we always pack a jar of almond butter, some kind of rice cracker/GF bread/etc., bananas, oats, nuts and seeds mix and dark choc to help satisfy those snack cravings • I bring my own herbal teas to help with digestion after meals on-the-go • avoid packaged foods as much as you possibly can • whether we’re camping, staying with friends or airbnb-ing for the night, we like to make our own meals at home for the most part, so we always stock up at a local grocery store to whip up veggie stir fry, veggie GF pasta, or a quick omelette That’s all for now babes! I had in my head that I had to be skinny. Praise the Lord it never got to the point that I had a true eating disorder; but it was going a bit too far. . When you set out to be HEALTHY & then it becomes an obsession with SKINNY. . Thank the Lord I had the influences I did in my life at just the right time. •My mom as a healthy role model. •All my professors at HSU in the exercise science department. •And friends that loved me through it all. . Looking back I’m thankful I went through it because it made me who I am today. But remember - it’s a HEALTH journey not a SKINNY journey. . Who cares if you’re skinny if you don’t have the health to have a great quality of life?!
You’ve made the perfect, most healthy salad. Loaded it with delicious toppings that are sure to give you a nutrition boost! You open the fridge and ponder over which salad dressing to dress your salad with, only to realize all your dressings are calorie loaded! 😱⠀ •⠀ •⠀ Here are a few topics of interest to consider when it comes to salad dressings:⠀ 1) Calories: one serving of dressing can easily pack in 200+ calories. I recommend maximum of 120 calories per salad dressing use, and less if possible! If your favorite is calorically dense, try mixing in vinegar or water to dilute it. Be sure to pay attention to the portion size - a 2 Tbsp serving is really not that big! ⠀ 2) Unknown ingredients: preservatives, thickening agents, coloring, etc. Opt for dressings with a shorter list of ingredients. ⠀ 3) Sodium: added for flavoring and a preservative. Try for 150 mg or less if possible per serving! ⠀ 4) Organic vs. conventional: organic can still pack on a significant amount of calories and sodium. Just because it’s labeled organic does not necessarily make it healthier than its counterparts. ⠀ These are just my personal recs and what works best for me! ⠀ •⠀ •⠀ If you want to make your own, oil and vinegar with salt and pepper to taste is a great option! I like a 1:1 ratio of oil to vinegar, and that can easily be changed pending on your preference. ⠀ •⠀ •⠀ Dining out? Ask for your dressing on the side to control the amount on your salad. More often than not, restaurants will LOAD your salad up with more dressing than you need! 2 tbsp is a typical salad dressing serving, which is honestly not that big - thats also how it’s so easy to overdue it on the dressings. Ranch, honey mustard, Caesar and thousand island are some of the biggest offenders to name a few, all extremely high in calories, saturated fats, sodium etc. Opt for more vinaigrette’s and less cream based dressings. Idk about you but I’d rather eat my calories with whole Foods instead of letting my salad swim in dressing. ❤️

It’s pretty easy to eat healthy/healthyish when you travel. I’m usually pretty good about packing my own chia pudding or veggie wraps for long plane rides home. But when I’m lazy or things get too crazy I love stopping by @napafarmsmarket in SFO! They have all the heathy snacks you need to get you through your travels. I also love that the majority of the products they carry are local to SF. I was able to grab my favorite SF @equatorcoffees coffee and some @mushfoods overnight oats. Here I am with my guy, a few weeks ago in Paris. On our first day in the city, we headed straight to the local markets. 🍎 🥑Why? It's a fun way to explore a destination and a great way to make sure you have plenty of healthy and fresh foods to nosh on. 🤩 . . It would have been so easy to simply order room service or go from cafe to cafe day every day. But I really see the value in being prepared! 🎉 I have to say, though, that I could have spent DAYS exploring the local markets and grocery stores (I love to see what's different and interesting. TRAVEL TUESDAY 🌎 Throw back to this crazy travel day on our Amsterdam trip earlier this year... It was about 35 degrees Celsius. While Noah napped and Steve packed up our apartment in a hurry, I RAN to the grocery store to stock up on some healthy food for our day of travel out of Amsterdam. Steve had to go and do a presentation at the conference he was there for. So I had to get me and Noah and all of our luggage (which was a LOT) to their airport and wait there for Steve to meet us after his presentation. Man, did I SWEAT! When Noah and I finally got to the airport with all of our stuff, I was SOOO relieved that I had packed some healthy food us to munch on while we waited for our flight. Especially seeing as though we had so much luggage that Noah and I had to just camp out on the floor with our stuff and wait for Steve to join us! Crazy travel memories! ⭐️ Eating clean & exercising while travelling is extremely difficult, especially when you’re constantly on the road, don’t often have access to a gym or any equipment, & from my experience, travelling in 30+ degree heat for weeks where fruit & veggies don’t last very long . From being around other ‘backpackers’ this proves to be a struggle for many . The past few months I have been lucky enough to be in a position where I can eat well and exercise frequently, building up my knowledge of health & fitness and discovering many useful methods to stay healthy while travelling . I’ve been putting together some home workout videos which involve very little or no equipment.... Ideal when you’re travelling!, But for now here is one of my favourite core exercises that absolutely destroys my abs for days 😵 Ps. I don’t carry this roller in my backpack, I was fortunate enough to meet a traveller who had one 👌🏼😂 . . Go on & give it a try! Here are my top five recs if you’re making a trip soon 🙃🎊: 💫 @toastsocietycafe - go straight from the airport or on your way to the airport for a little something to brining you back to life, it’s AMAZE 🤤 💫 @backstreetboys - all my 90s babies will feel me here🕺🏼Show was INCREDIBLE! 💫 @theneonmuseumlasvegas - otherwise known as the sign graveyard! So fun to see all of this history of LV! 📸 💫 @bellagio fountain show, their art installation & there is a @juicepress in this hotel that you can get all the 🥗veggies, nutrients, etc. that you need replenished! 💫 @vegenation - didn’t get to make it here sadly, but def on my list for next time! My other tips are of course to stay hydrated, check out your hotel spa (if you’re in a budget like me 🤑, you may be able to just pay a small admission fee to use the common facilities), walk 🏃🏼‍♀️more than not to get your steps in and consider waking up to do a short 🤸🏼‍♀️workout to start your day. One thing I have been incorporating into my travel diet in India is curd or dahi. It’s very easy to come by here and lots of places you can see it being prepared fresh ready to be sold. . It’s a typical ingredient in a lassi (like a milkshake) or I’ve been having it with a fresh fruit salad. . Dahi is made by boiling and cooling milk to 30-40°C and adding a spoonful of curd. Curd has lactic acid bacteria or lactobacillus. This bacteria multiplies itself in the ambient temperature of 30-40°C and in few hours ferments the milk to form curd. . Curd is a rich source of calcium and protein and may be suitable for those with a lactose intolerance. . In India, curd is served with many curries and thalis as it aids digestion and gives a cooling relief from spicy foods. . One of the most famous shops in Varanasi is a lassi shop. Blue lassi offers so many flavour combinations I want to say well over 50 but I can’t quit remember. . I went for the papaya and pomegranate to up my nutrients for the day. I also read an interesting article from @muktiorganics that said that pomegranates is good for skin so thought I would up my intake as they are everywhere in India. . Lloyd went for the banana, coconut and chocolate. . Both were super tasty, creamy and left us wanting another one. . Also they are served in terracotta pots and wooden spoons. No plastic here. Although not sure what happens to the terracotta pots afterwards. . Eating curd is supporting our digestion with the good bacteria. Something that we need a lot of whilst travelling India. . I jumped from sunglasses in Miami to gloves in New York to the desert hat in the UAE in less than 48 hrs. Staying healthy on the road is by far the toughest thing to manage for even the healthiest minded people. My regimen *intermittent fasting. You are not really that hungry in the morning especially when jet lagged *no carbs in flight and cut the food in half - good prep for not being hungry later *drinking min 2.5 liters of water daily, buying fancy new water to trick yourself into newness of it *using jet lag and non hungry moments as a guide to skip a meal *limit alcohol to 1.5 every other day especially first few days when you need to shake off airplane bloatness *saying no to sugar except maybe one special treat per week - sugar is the same everywhere. I’d rather use calories for local unique options *workout by exploring new boutique studios. None of the hotels had gyms and it wasn’t possible to run everyday either because of where we were staying. This allowed me to get a little more creative with my workouts. JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS IN BALI The Indonesian Ministry of Health has, this week, alerted the public (including tourists) of a recent outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis in both Bali and Sulawesi (Manado). Limited details are available, and we await more information to be released by the Indonesian Ministry of Health. In the meantime, news sources (including social media) will seize on this outbreak. It is therefore important for travellers to understand real risk rather than “risk” portrayed by the media. TRAVEL TIP- what you should always pack in your travel kit if you’re going to high risk countries 🎒👜 1. Hydration solution (for if you get diarrhoea)- the key to managing traveller’s diarrhoea is maintaining hydration so this item is essential 🥤 2. Loperamide- to stop diarrhoea if required. This can be used in traveller’s diarrhoea to prevent fluid losses. If the diarrhoea is bloody though or you are really unwell with fevers we usually suggest avoiding these diarrhoea stopping agents so the body can get rid of the toxins 3. Hand sanitiser- to reduce risk of traveller’s diarrhoea 🚿4. The usual stuff - bandaids, paracetamol, ibuprofen, anti-histamines if you use them - whatever you use at home should go with you 💊 5. If you’re travelling to a Zika virus area and you’re trying to avoid conceiving due to the risks DON’T forget contraception- pill/condoms/whatever you use 👶🏽 6. Mosquito repellant preferably with DEET 💪🏾7. Sunscreen- skin cancer isn’t worth it- and don’t forget to reapply TWO HOURLY when outdoors! ☀️🌴 8. It may provide comfort by making the skin feel cool but it does not help the skin repair any quicker. You know I’ll always advocate for avoiding the sun burn in the first place ☀️✌🏾 2. Mums often say “don’t swim until an hour after your meal has settled”- there’s no links between eating with drowning or near drowning events. You may get a cramp if you do strenuous swimming after a meal but the drowning link is an old wives tale 3. For mosquito bite prevention there is sadly no evidence that garlic, vitamin B1 or vitamin B12 supplements work. So whilst garlic may repel other humans, it isn’t likely to work on mozzies! Healthy Traveling Tips 🦋 As some of you may already know, I spent this weekend in Warsaw. It is a new experience for me since I’ve never been to Warsaw before (except for passing through). I came to Warsaw for a concert and to spend some time with my friend 🎉! And of course, I couldn’t forget about making my stay a healthy one. I believe in sticking to your goals no matter what the circumstances are. So, here’s what to do to make sure your holiday doesn’t set you back on your health goals: 1. Food! 🥐🍔🍕🥗🥞🍳 While I think it’s great to try new dishes, I think moderation is key. If you really have your mind set on that one dish (and you know, most of the time it’s not the healthiest choice 🍩), try it! Just don’t make the whole time you’re traveling a “cheat” period. You can balance it out by eating healthier at other meals. For example, you had a nice sweet breakfast at Ladurée. Don’t sweat it! Have something healthier and lighter for the other meals of the day. 2. Drinks. I think the best drink to travel with is water 💧. Keeps you hydrated at all times. Take a water bottle everywhere you go. Of course you can try other drinks, but again, the key to success is moderation. Carefully read the ingredient list. And remember the drinks you order ☕️ aren’t a substitute for water. 3. Exercise 💪🏼. Depends on how long your stay is and what you plan on doing there can be a couple options. If it’s a short trip you’ll probably do just fine with waking around the city. But if you’re staying for longer you can try a fun street workout, gym workout (if possible) 🏋🏽‍♀️ or even do one in your hotel room (try @blogilates ). 4. Sleep. Don’t forget that 😉.
