"The desert could not be claimed or owned–it was a piece of cloth carried by winds, never held down by stones, and given a hundred shifting names... Its caravans, those strange rambling feasts and cultures, left nothing behind, not an ember. All of us, even those with European homes and children in the distance, wished to remove the clothing of our countries. It was a place of faith. We disappeared into landscape." Michael Ondaatje 'The English Patient'
Arsalan Kolkata has 2 locations and I visited their main branch which is known for its consistency. You can sit downstairs which has fans but we decided to sit upstairs in the AC floor which had a little waiting going on. With the weather starting to get hot it’s worth waiting to get a table upstairs.
Ordered the Special Mutton Biryani which being a Kolkata Special has a nice subtle aroma in the rice and had mutton and potatoes. Kolkata people love their potatoes and you won’t find a biryani without it. The biryani was nice but nothing to get me excited about.
The star dish was their Mutton Stew in red gravy which had a lot of black peppers and was absolutely divine. Polished it off with tandoori roti. A must order at Arsalaan.
Also had their Mutton Chop which is a Tawa dish and was ok, the gravy flavor was different then others . Also had the Mutton Cutlet which is a huge cutlet and topped with a little gravy. Also delicious and melts in your mouth .
The chicken seekh kababs were soft but over spiced which had no chicken taste coming just spices .
Overall a great experience at Arsalaan, will surely visit again and also their main competitor- Shiraaz next time .
