No sign of my little SquirrelSon today. I’m sure this nonstop rain has him denned up in a nice dry nest or hollow tree. So I’d like to share one of our other critters with you. This is Bruce Leroy, a juvenile Greater Siren. One of only three salamanders that remain in an aquatic stage throughout their lives (up to 30 years), and the only one with claws on its tiny forelimbs. They can grow up to 36” long and eat small aquatic invertebrates up to full grown crayfish, depending on their size. When water dries up they will burrow into the mud and remain in hibernation for several years. It has both external gills and internal lungs too. .
