Day 7: Our last day in Tbilisi 💔 We decided to go to the other end of town for slightly different taste of Georgia. . . About a half hour drive from Rustaveli/Old Town is the Chronicle of Georgia. Sitting atop a hill, this structure - oft referred to as 'the Stonehenge of Tbilisi' - is a collection of gigantic sculptures that depict scenes from the History of Georgia and from Christianity. Brainchild of Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, who received his training during the Soviet era (influences of which reflect very strongly in this structure!), construction began in 1985 but never finished. The partially incomplete structure is awe-inspiring nonetheless. . . From here, you can get fabulous panoramic views of a very different part of Tbilisi. One the right, at the back, lies the idyllic Tbilisi reservoir ... the waters competing in their blueness with the skies, framed by lush greenery all around. . . Move you gave a little to the left, and the landscape changes drastically. You are now overlooking Tbilisi's suburbs. Hundreds of solemn soviet era apartment blocks create a pattern that is both mesmerizing and somber. . . Of course a fabulous last meal was in order after this. We headed to Georgian House. Both of us were craving another round of Mtsvadi (meat bbqed Georgian style) and the internet said this is where we should go. Oh boy, was it good! Not just the Mtsvadi, but our entire meal of pkhali, nadughi, bbqed vegetables, shrimp cooked in white wine, and garlic bread. Yum! . . Our last activity was to finally give the metro a try. The metro station transported us to a different era. Yep, you guessed it: the soviet era! When in Tbilisi, do ride the metro for a trip back in time! . . . . . . . . . #ujalaland #ujalaintbilisi #ujalaingeorgia #worldwithoutborders #wanderlust #hownottotravellikeabasicbitch #travelposting #traveldiary #pakistaniwriters #travelwriter #traveljunkie #beautifulplaces #thetravelwomen #wearetravelgirls #backpackwithme #solofemaletravel #ladiesgoneglobal #travelblogger #travelgirl #girlaroundtheworld #womenwhoexplore #womenwhotravel #girlslovetravel #globetrotter #travelgirlsofficial #browngirlstravelblog #tbilisi #georgia
Day 6 in Tbilisi started out with two intentions: food and fotos 🥗📷 . . Ruby, the Scottish girl who works at Los Crayfish Hermanos, and who we befriended when we had lunch there, had told us about a great little cafe where the lady at the counter adds up your bill with an abacus. We had a delicious traditional meal of khinkali, ajapsandali, mtsvadi and lobiani. I absolutely fell in love with ajapsandali (eggplants stewed in onions, tomatoes, garlic, herbs and spices, and served cold) and pretty sure it's one of my favorite Georgia foods now! At the same resto, we also bumped into the Ukrainian couple we met on our first day in Tbilisi, and all of a sudden the city felt more like home 💕 . . Next on the agenda was a walk down Betlemi to admire and photograph the lovely architecture, and hopes of being able to find one of the old buildings that hide beautiful crumbling, murals behind their beautiful, crumbling doors. Mission was accomplished! . . Betlemi street is so interesting. It has old, rundown (but still gorgeous!) buildings at one end (which looks very local residential), and cute, new buildings housing hotels and cafes at the other end (very obviously catering to tourists). It's worth walking down the whole street in one go to truly appreciate the contrast! . . Our walk ended near Abanotubani, an old neigborhood where the most prominent features are the mosque and the sulphur baths, both of which deserve separate posts of their own, which I will do soon. . . We ended our day with some delicious Georgian wine with a local cheese platter. Dry red for @bonexaw and semisweet white for me. The cheeses were accompanied by honey and the ubiquitous churchkhela. What an interesting combo! . . . . . . . . . #ujalaland #ujalaintbilisi #ujalaingeorgia #worldwithoutborders #wanderlust #hownottotravellikeabasicbitch #travelposting #traveldiary #pakistaniwriters #travelwriter #traveljunkie #beautifulplaces #thetravelwomen #wearetravelgirls #backpackwithme #solofemaletravel #ladiesgoneglobal #travelblogger #travelgirl #girlaroundtheworld #womenwhoexplore #womenwhotravel #girlslovetravel #globetrotter #travelgirlsofficial #browngirlstravelblog #tbilisi #georgia
Day 5 in Tbilisi we caught up on leftover plans from the previous days! . . We started our day with the Rustaveli Street Market, which features handmade items from small, local makers. A lot of makers man their stalls themselves and its great to meet them and talk to them while looking at their work. A great place to get some unique Georgian souveneirs to take home (like a colorful lasercut acrylic pin that says 'I love you' in Georgian!) . . Next we made our way to the Rike Park for the aerial tramway. Costing just 2.5gel, this tramway takes you up the hill from Rike Park to Narikala Fortress, and affords spectacular views along the way. . . Upon getting off, our destination was the zipline at the Botanical Gardens. I'm surprised there wasn't a longer line for it! It cost 40gel per person, and takes sailing through spelndid green views of the park. There are two lines side by side, so you can do it together with a partner! . . We landed in the middle of the Botanical Gardens, and what a lovely place to spend an afternoon it was! We were searching for the Sulphur Waterfalls, where we spent a good amount of time just listening to the waterfall and enjoying it's spray on our faces and bodies. (It was Sulphur water, so a good shower and sone laundry were in order when we got home!) . . We trekked out of the park to a cafe overlooking the river and the city, where we enjoyed delicious Beef Mtsvadi and drinks, before it started pouring down! Us and other guests huddled along with cafe workers inside a tiny tent covering the kitchen of this totally open air cafe, watching the rain wash Tbilisi and paint the sunset sky in gorgeous pinks and purples 💜 . . . . . . . . . #ujalaland #ujalaintbilisi #ujalaingeorgia #worldwithoutborders #wanderlust #hownottotravellikeabasicbitch #travelposting #traveldiary #pakistaniwriters #travelwriter #traveljunkie #beautifulplaces #thetravelwomen #wearetravelgirls #backpackwithme #solofemaletravel #ladiesgoneglobal #travelblogger #travelgirl #girlaroundtheworld #womenwhoexplore #womenwhotravel #girlslovetravel #globetrotter #travelgirlsofficial #browngirlstravelblog #tbilisi #georgia
Day 4 in Tbilisi we had lofty plans: walk to the Dry Bridge Market and browse through the soviet era memorabilia, ride the aerial tramway that runs from Rike Park up to Narikala Fortress, do the zipline at Botanical Gardens, and enjoy a Georgian meal at the highly recommended Flowers Cafe. . . We only ended up doing two out of those four things. . . But we did take some pretty awesome detours to check out the gorgeous Kashveti Church on Rustaveli, spent an absurdly long time marvelling at the soviet era treasures at Dry Bridge Market, took a really long scenic walk along the river admiring Georgian architecture, frolicked around the Peace Bridge and watched thunderbolts strike the horizon, enjoyed one of our best Georgian meals over a stunning sunset, and spent the evening dancing to local music on the square outside Rike Park where they closed the main streets in celebration of "18th May" ... the significance of which we googled numerous time and still found no reference to! . . A lovely day of languid exploration 💕 My best travel days are when I just allow my day to unfold. How about you? . . . . . . . . . #ujalaland #ujalaintbilisi #ujalaingeorgia #worldwithoutborders #wanderlust #hownottotravellikeabasicbitch #travelposting #traveldiary #pakistaniwriters #travelwriter #traveljunkie #beautifulplaces #thetravelwomen #wearetravelgirls #backpackwithme #solofemaletravel #ladiesgoneglobal #travelblogger #travelgirl #girlaroundtheworld #womenwhoexplore #womenwhotravel #girlslovetravel #globetrotter #travelgirlsofficial #browngirlstravelblog #tbilisi #georgia
Day 3 in Tbilisi I did one of my favorite things when travelling: stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new. . . I've been sampling all kinds of local food on this trip. Albeit very yummy, nothing out of the ordinary and outrageous. . . We were searching online for new food to try and @bonexaw nearly dropped his phone when he discovered @loscrayfishhermanos . He was in New Orleans for Jazzfest just before this trip, and decided that it was time I lost my crawfish/crayfish virginity. . . We walked through the rundown streets near Betlemi, and arrived at the most unassuming little bar, with just two tables with seating outside, and a handful more indoors. . . We quickly befriended Ruby, the Scottish girl who worked there and was on her 5th summer in Tbilisi. She guided us through ordering two pounds of crayfish caught locally, cooked in local herbs and spices, and served with decidedly Georgian sauces, with a side of lobiani bread. . . Eating the crayfish was a real lesson in the reality of where my food comes from. It had legs. And eyes. And the female ones had roe/eggs. It was all so visceral. Disgusting? That was my initial reaction. But really, how was it any different from eating any other meat? Just because I don't see the cow or chicken that my meat comes from, doesn't mean it's any different. . . Getting the meat out was a real art. I cut my fingers on the sharp shell several times, and squirted juice all over. It was delicious, but a lot of hard work for a very small bite! . . In the end, I got two things I value so much when I travel: new experiences, and new friends on the road. . . We spent hours chatting away with Ruby, and with Hussain, a Saudi on his last night in Tbilisi. Great night! . . . . . #ujalaland #ujalaintbilisi #ujalaingeorgia #worldwithoutborders #wanderlust #traveljournal #travelposting #traveldiary #pakistaniwriters #travelwriter #traveljunkie #beautifulplaces #thetravelwomen #wearetravelgirls #backpackwithme #solofemaletravel #ladiesgoneglobal #travelblogger #travelgirl #girlaroundtheworld #womenwhoexplore #womenwhotravel #girlslovetravel #globetrotter #travelgirlsofficial #browngirlstravelblog #tbilisi #georgia
Day 2 in Tbilisi: It's a great day for a walk around some of the city's notable sights! . . Starting at our airbnb on Rustaveli, we walked down to Freedom Square and turned off onto a side street for what the locals refer to as "Hogwarts" (the school from Harry Potter). As a Potterhead, this was a must! The school was once a borading school for German girls, and actually has nothing to do with Harry Potter, but the neo-Gothic architecure definitely makes it look like it does . . The school sits at the head of our next destination: Betlemi Street - a cobblestoned street lined with houses bearing carved balconies and cute courtyards. . . At the end of Betlemi Steet lie the Betlemi Stairs, which lead you up the hill to our next stop: Kartlis Deda, and offer lovely views of the city along the way. . . At the top of the stairs is the Betlemi information centre and a lovely terrace with a rose garden and benches. Enjoy panoramic views of the city while you catch your breath and brace yourself for the climb up to Kartlis Deda. . . Kartlis Deda - Mother of Georgia - one of the most prominent landmarks of the city, was erected in 1958 to mark the 1500th anniversary of the city. She holds wine in one hand to greet those who come as friends, and a sword in the other for those who come as enemies. . . Our final stop was the 4th century Narikala fortress, which is now little more than crumbling walls, but makes for excellent views and exciting climbs. Watch your foot, though. The walls are literally crumbling! . . This whole trek took us about three hours, and the last bits were definitely a little tricky ... But every bit worth it. Wear good shoes and take lots of water. . . . . . . . #ujalaland #ujalaintbilisi #ujalaingeorgia #worldwithoutborders #wanderlust #traveljournal #travelposting #traveldiary #pakistaniwriters #travelwriter #traveljunkie #beautifulplaces #thetravelwomen #wearetravelgirls #backpackwithme #solofemaletravel #ladiesgoneglobal #travelblogger #travelgirl #girlaroundtheworld #womenwhoexplore #womenwhotravel #girlslovetravel #globetrotter #travelgirlsofficial #browngirlstravelblog #tbilisi #georgia
Today marks a very special day in my travel story: I completed a quarter century of countries 😍 . . I am in Tbilisi, Georgia, right now .. the 25th country I have travelled to! . . The last time I went to a new country was Scotpand last year. I spent three weeks in Edinburgh in January and fell in love with the city. . . I can see myself falling in love with Georgia too. It's too early to tell for sure ... I have only been here about 24 hours, but something about this city already speaks to me. . . I watched the sun set today from a beautiful terrace overlooking the old city, and I truly felt I had been transported to a land of fairy tales. The lush, green hills with churches perched atop, the narrow river with quaint bridges over it, the sky painted in magical hues as the sun set 😍 . . I have a week here in Georgia and I feel like spending it all in Tbilisi! . . Tell me about the last city you fell in love with! . . . . . . . . . . #ujalaland #ujalaintbilisi #ujalaingeorgia #worldwithoutborders #wanderlust #traveljournal #travelposting #traveldiary #pakistaniwriters #travelwriter #traveljunkie #beautifulplaces #thetravelwomen #wearetravelgirls #backpackwithme #solofemaletravel #ladiesgoneglobal #travelblogger #travelgirl #girlaroundtheworld #womenwhoexplore #womenwhotravel #girlslovetravel #globetrotter #travelgirlsofficial #browngirlstravelblog #tbilisi #georgia
