A little over/under action out at Salt Springs this past weekend. It's good to get out and have some more leisure days of diving. This location doesn't offer much for me for freediving, but I still had a blast and got enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Juvenile sperm whale Rap peels away from her mother Rip for a closer look. Sperm whales in Dominica are identified from the surface by distinctive markings on their flukes, so if they dive without displaying their tail it is very difficult to identify the whale. From our vantage point in the water and by comparing underwater imagery with the researchers fluke catalog I was able to successfully identify all of the whales we encountered during our project to complete the written report for the Dominican Fisheries Department. Rap was always easy to ID but some of the other whales in her social group were more elusive and therefore trickier to recognize!
