This morning I attended an inspiring seminar on diversity and inclusiveness within the workforce.
One of the standout takeaways for me was that it isn’t just about the minorities, it’s about the uniqueness of everyone, our personalities.
Too often when we think about diversity, our minds jump to the minorities relating to gender, ethnicity, age etc. Workplaces try to tick the boxes in striving to be inclusive of the minorities, which is great to an extent, but the focus can almost shift too much to building a company which is just physically diverse. .
I liken this to how extreme feminists have taken something intended for the better, gender equality and equal rights, and are now all about preaching ‘girl power’ (to extremes) undermining men.
I believe we are ALL equal, we all have differing strengths that we can contribute, so the more diverse a company, the more ideas that will be generated.
Personality, to me, is the core of diversity within an organisation, the physical attributes mentioned above follow.
