In the airport in Marseille, my phone tells me I am 1 hour 3 minutes from home by car. By home, it means the place I have returned to over and over, everyday, for months. By home, it means Lacoste. In the Marseille, airport, I watch a father kneel down to tie the laces of his young daughters shoe. She is licking a luggage tag and trying to stick it to the arm of the airport chair like a stamp. He tells her to stop licking the paper she found on the ground. “Papa?” She asks, “veaux-tu prendre ma photo?” He pulls out his phone, she poses, he snaps a photo. I smile. I realize I am eavesdropping. I realize as soon as I board this plane to Belgium and the one to Munich and finally the one to Naples, there will be no more eavesdropping. I will no longer have the language in my pocket. I will switch back to English for my time in Italy. In the Marseille airport, I say my last few words in French. I say, merci to the woman who sells me a bottle of water and a newspaper and merci to the woman who scans my ticket and hands back my passport and merci to the man who holds the door open for me to pass through. So many merci’s. And it seems fitting, all I have to say to France is simply: Merci. Thank you. I want to be so sad to leave, but my heart is just so full.
