Sometimes it feels as though I could spend unlimited time, hours even, flowing & practicing yoga on my mat with a great playlist for company. Other times it’s such a struggle to get out of my head after five minutes all attempts are abandoned in favour of a simple restorative pose or savasana. Today was one of those days when self practice was so much fun and such an indulgence without the kids & before packing the car to come to the Christmas lights of London. “Speech is Silver. Silence is Golden” This proverb has been written in many forms & has been dated back to ancient Egypt where it was recorded “Silence is more profitable than abundance of speech.” In yoga, we speak of Mouna, spiritual silence..having discipline over our speech and control over our expressions of our senses. It can be (soooooooooooooo) hard to adhere to this but everyday, I am taught the value of this lesson on so many different levels. One is knowledge — just how much I learn when I truly listen instead of trying to speak,to respond..what I learn from what others choose to say & also what they choose to avoid saying. The knowledge gained might be academic, might be unpleasant or disappointing, transformative or enlightening, it can relate to history, a person, oneself,studies,relationships, anything really...no matter, as it is all knowledge nonetheless. Ontem comecei uma reflexão sobre os asanas que não curto muito (e o pq), graças a uma conversa super reveladora com @gmcyoga . Descobri que não gosto das posturas onde não consigo respirar, onde me sinto fora de controle ou sem certeza da localização espacial do meu corpo. E obvio tb, não gosto daquelas que me doem. Ponto. . Hoje, com a minha queridíssima cunhada (e fisioterapeuta monstra) @gaby_benatti soube porque nunca gostei muito de #ustrasana ou #posturadocamelo , embora AME outras extensoes como #urdhvadhanurasana . É lógico que nunca é uma coisa só e sim um conjunto delas. Mas a sensação de soltar totalmente a cabeça no 🐫 é mortal para mim: não consigo respirar, sinto uma tensão gigante na mandíbula e não consigo sustentar por mais de 3 segundos. . Resultado da ópera? Preciso ganhar mais flexibilidade no meu diafragma (ou seja aprender a respirar diferente), soltar os músculos microlindos que vivem atras das vértebras cervicais e trabalhar tb meu super #esternocleidomastoideo . Isso em termos anatômicos. Agora super disposta a mergulhar nas energias do meu Vishuddha chakra, meu jalandhara bandha e, desde aí, ver como me relaciono com o intelecto, meu tagarelismo excessivo. Meu maior desafio: filtrar com mais Amor as palavras que saem da minha garganta. . I’m full of pre-emptive nostalgia for all the good times I’m about to have. Spending tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur on my way to BALI!!! Somebody pinch me!! ✨💘
I have a strong back bend practice. My spine is bendy, my shoulders are open and you may have noticed in previous posts, I really enjoy back bending. However, I avoid drop backs because drop backs are one of those transitions where you can set up all the right conditions; warm up the spine and shoulders, get your feet grounded, your legs and core engaged, but at the very last second you need to let go and trust. (And risk bumping your noggin which I may or may not have done a few times this morning; you'll never know for sure, footage has been destroyed). This is hard for me because I like situations where I can control the beginning, middle, and end. And so I avoid the drop back, not because it is outside of my physical capabilities but because it taps into an uncomfortable aspect of my character that I like to leave alone, that being my need to control the universe. So this week I am facing this head on; this will be my practice on and off the mat. This post is to invite you to consider what YOU avoid and WHY you avoid it, (beyond "I just don't wanna or I just don't like it") and to confront it, whether it’s a conversation you need to have with another person, a yoga pose or transition you never do, or a task that you've been putting it off for whatever reason. Do it!! Look it in the face and say fuck you! Well, maybe not fuck you but hi, how’s it going? Share what you avoid in the comments. 😁
Please tell me you see my puppy say “excuse me”? Oh my god she’s so cute. Today’s practice was lovely, for starters it was at home with all my animals, with groovy music, a little dancing and petting my parrot Polly who was next to my mat the whole time. These are my favorite practices, plus a tweaked my back 2 weeks ago and I’m back to my free, liberated, body.
