A story on simple provisions - take these leaves, or the twigs, or even the compost layer in the background. So many times this year, I was desperately in need of a provision. It was just that kind of year.. and, as with each of the things you see here, I simply put out the intention that I needed them, and I kept chugging along as best as I could in the meantime. Someone wrote earlier today that permaculture has taught her patience.. A-WOmen to that 🙆 Can you relate??
The leaves - I had actually just finished putting a layer of compost on the other side of the bamboo teepees and thought to myself that I really needed a nutrient rich covering for the inside of the teepees. I put out the intention that I needed more leaves. No sooner had I thought it, I looked down in the swale where I was working and realized that I was standing on a nice batch of freshly fallen leaves! Score! So I tucked them into the teepees and gave thanks 💚 .
The twigs - very similar story. Several years ago, I needed something to really give our main garden beds a sense of completion, but I had no financial resources to put toward it. Then, I realized that our white willows had been freely shedding twigs across our property all winter. That was the start of my wattle-esque borders, and I have maintained the relationship with the willows each year, especially when I expand into new beds.
The compost - after the kind of ridonkulous weather we had pretty much this entire year, I knew the gardens needed some serious TLC before winter.. but, after said year, I was also very strapped for cash. I just kept putting the intention out there that I needed a provision, and, out of nowhere, a friend gifted me with a trunkful of really good horse manure. I composted it down with our leaves and our kitchen compost, and voila!
I have been fortunate to have simple provisions come through for me and my family all year. It really has made all the difference. Someone up there has been listening 😉 Thank you 💚
Even tho' my shop is closed for a few weeks, these are still papery days. Years ago, I made these little lampshades from some mulberry paper a friend gave me. They were looking pretty shabby, so I gave them a gentle brushing and pasted them freshly onto the metal frames that fit over the light bulbs. They will be good for another many years now. When I get some organic cranberries next grocery shop, I'll make my traditional little piles of them at the base of each light and they will shine, red and jewel-like throughout the season.
Replacement only No/Low buy parameters:
1. Replacement only no-buy until april 1st. Example: if I run out of my only mascara I can buy a new one.
2. Replacements must be cruelty-free.
3. During april I can only buy a product if I used one up in that category or I dont have one in that category. For example: if I use up a lip liner by april but I still have one left, I can still buy a new one. Also if you have no eyeliners you can buy one if you want.
4. No impulse buys, think about something for at least a week before purchase.
5. Don't buy backups unless its glossier boy brow. (Since I have to buy it from the glossier website and its the only thing I use in my brows.)
6. I can buy a limit of 2 eyeshadow products (palette and cream eyeshadow).
7. Try to only buy during sales. (like the april and november vib sephora sales).
8. Use up more products than I purchase money wise.
9. Participate in project pan this year.
10. Unsubscribe from beauty brand emails.

A simple example of how you can use natural materials and what you already own to decorate your table for this year's Christmas feast! 🎄
I quickly put this together a few weeks ago when I foraged the bark and leaves for a photo for our zero waste Christmas decorations and gifts article (you can find it via our bio if you missed it) and it's still decorating our dining table.
Add a pretty table runner, some fabric napkins, some leaf confetti, and heaps of food ready to be eaten and you have a gorgeous festive setting. No need for plastic and glitter (which is just more plastic)!
How are you decorating your Christmas celebration this year? 💮❄️🎀

For the past few months, I’ve been trying to decide what to do for my daily project for 2019. I have absolutely loved working in the book my friend @beacon_bonfire
made for me and I considered begging her to make me another one and offer to clean her house for a year in return, but then I thought of how I enjoyed the change of working in a new book this year. And then, when I was purging my art materials for the supply swap for the Visual Journal Collective in November, I took inventory of all my blank and partially used books. It’s a little ridiculous how many I have that have been on my shelves for years waiting for me to finally crack open the cover and work in them. I have books from my favorite artists and bookbinders such as @sarahearn
. I have books I’ve made. I have books I’ve collected from estate sales because the titles were so perfect and just beckoning me to use them as a journal (The Melting of Molly…how have I not used that yet??). I pulled out a pile of my favorites and seeing the stack helped me make my decision – I’m working through that pile of books for my daily project in 2019. So much of my creative practice has been based on using what I have and finding inspiration from what’s around me so I’m using that as the foundation of my project next year. And I’m going to change up my format a bit and also use a page to track dates and the stories I post so that I don’t lose them. Now I just need to decide which book to use first! Although, Heather, I still feel like I should offer to clean your house for a year as a thank you for the gift of this year’s book. It has changed my life. You have changed my life. I can never thank you enough for that. .

Sample use up update! I'm changing up this project again because I've already taken my inventory posts for samples which I never did in previous inventory counts and I did not expect the results. I counted about 90 individual sample packets of various kinds, which is much higher than I was hoping after consistently using them all year. I really want to organize my sample use up a little more for next year. This year I had a rolling sample use up for most of the year then made it themed for a few months. My new idea is to do something like #365daysofsamples
next year, which I've seen @shadowsmoked
/Elle S on youtube do for years. I think instead of random picks though I want to move through my samples by category with my first category being moisturizers, with my first update in a month. My goal is to work through every sample I have acquired up until this point next year, then start working through my deluxe samples also in a systematic way. I'm at a point where I really like my skincare routine and I'd like to use up all the samples I haven't decided to declutter yet. I'll stop using any of them if they break me out or have an intense fragrance but otherwise my plan is to use them all up! The first picture of moisturizers is ones I'm planning on using on my face then the second one is ones I already know I prefer as body/ hand cream. ---------- Before I go, mini reviews on the last four! I wasn't very enthusiastic about the tatcha cream, it didn't feel like anything special. Same thoughts about the serum. The sunscreen I actually liked - a really light powdery texture and didn't leave a whitecast though I was worried for the first minute it might. Only downside was a light synthetic scent but not too bad. I might consider purchasing it if it's not too expensive and I don't end up liking any other ones because I'm doing skincare ronb with samples next year but I haven't checked the price. The becca color correctors I've wanted to try forever and I didn't really like them. The green wasn't opaque enough, the orange was way too dark for me, and the purple was the first purple corrector I've ever tried - I actually liked it but I know I could find a cheaper one.
Continuing with the whole “Use what you already have” theme for Christmas decor and wrap, the bathroom can become a great source for supplies! Twigs of course, courtesy of my back yard. Also, after a pathetic attempt at making a Duct tape star on the top, (It honestly looked like it was cut out by a two fingered monkey...), I settled on a remnant of green ribbon for just a little pop of color. 🎄😃. #usewhatyouhave #christmasdecor #christmaswrapping #cotton
Our CSA had their cabbage crop not do well. So there was one head for the winter. I decided I celebrate it with a sauerkraut to enjoy later this winter with some sausage. It’s not how little you have, it’s how well you use it. #ferment #sauerkraut #usewhatyouhave

🌍 Update no.1 on my Pan in Every Palette. Where are the other three palettes? I’ve simply left them home. In the last week of November I suddenly had to move to Tuscany for a new job, and I just brought MR with me. Hit pan, but not on the intended shade, which is Warm Taupe. I’ll keep these palettes till mid February, then I’ll switch to other 4 ones. I just hope to make some progress on the other three as soon as I can be reunited with them!

My parents are super creative and extremely resourceful people! The epitome of self sufficiency and independent! Back in the 70’s, Christmas decorating in our house was more about pushing the envelope of creativeness and frugality than commercial extravagance. My mom collected tuna fish cans, my dad soldered them together then mom spray painted this clever tree which was then filled with ornaments. We love this!
We are grateful that they have passed on a touch of their pioneer spirit to us!

✨ New up-cycle ✨ I talked about this dress on my stories a few weeks ago. and I finally took some pics to show it off. 👏🏻 I got it for my brothers wedding a few years ago. Both of my siblings were getting married a few months apart. I took it upon myself to to be ‘X’ amount of pounds by that summer and then buy some awesome dresses so I could look good in all the pictures. Well, I hit my goal and bought this dress and only wore it 2 more times after that. I wanted too, but I couldn’t. The arms were getting way too tight and the pleats were starting to poke out in a way I didn’t like. I let this dress defeat me.
Fast forward to a month ago, when I needed something nice to wear to my husbands work party. I turned to the only item that was appropriate in my closet, and out of necessity I brainstormed. New sleeves and turning the pleats into darts was the easy answer to not only my immediate need, but what I realized was also the final piece I needed to heal my heart...(continued in next post tomorrow)
