Irresistible family appeal at 10 Curral Road, Elsternwick
Just waiting here patiently for you...
Always wanted a fireplace to put a beautiful Christmas garland on! It’s still a work in progress but gradually adding more to it! Got to find stockings next! Look how the candle highlights Colin & Lucy in the house painting! Video at the end to try capture it better. 🤗🎄✨
Good people of Instagram...I need your opinions. So, for the last 10 years we have had the same 32" TV, which still works beautifully. It served us well in our little rancher, but it was dwarfed in this big living room, so it was time for an upgrade. Queue in this monstrosity...I love our new TV, I adore it...but it is the most un-victorian thing I have ever seen. Now let's be realistic here...Yes, we want this house to be as period accurate as possible, but the reality is...we still have to live here and, like it or not, the TV has to stay. There's no other wall to put it in so now the question is...how to blend it in? The credenza you see there is just temporary, it needs to be refinished and moved to another room, so that will be gone, and we will be buying a more period appropriate piece of furniture for the TV components...but around the TV, what should I put there? Something above the TV? Something on the sides? What do you think? At least we were able to hide the cables! 😁

This is another not so pretty post, but with the start of a re-pipe, there is always an obstacle. We have to do more demo in the bathroom then originally planned. We are removing the pony wall to access the pipes that are behind it. I never thought I would discover anything fun behind this little wall, so here it is... can you tell??? My husband had no idea what it was, I started getting so excited when I saw a peep of it.
You guys...you guys...you guuuuys!!! Take a look at this! Ok...quick back story...I signed for an account with Newspapers.com and started doing some research, and I came across this article...Published February 14th, 1908 in the York Daily newspaper, the title reads: "Dallastown Man Entertains Friends"...Look..at..this...article!!! You all remember Chauncey, right? He was about to marry his father's housekeeper but died two weeks before the wedding? The more I find out about Chauncey, the more I discover his character. He clearly was a socialite, a man who liked to entertain, and I have learned that he had a few flings before Idabelle, all women of high social status, which makes me wonder why he chose a housekeeper to settle down? Nothing wrong with that, but he could have had any woman he wanted...why choose her? What was it about Idabelle that tamed Chauncey? But anyway...isn't this the absolutely most victorian thing you ever read? (I know it's past victorian time, but if you have ever watched a period drama you will know exactly what I mean)

How many folks can say they found their house on @cheapoldhouses
? Our youngest son saw the post and sent it to us. Two weeks later we were in contract. I’d read stories of people who bought houses they’d only seen on the internet. I never thought I’d be one of them. I didn’t get to see her until about a month after we closed. I thank God for it working out that way. Had I seen it beforehand, I probably would have chickened out.
Is it too early to be planning Christmas table layouts?? Asking for a friend... Also let’s all pretend we can’t see the photoshop fail on the right, the runner was as short as my patience to correct it. Happy Friday!
Today’s post is all about the big win during demo - the destruction of the laundry room.
📷 1 - This is the view standing at the front door. The wall directly ahead is the backside of the laundry room. (Don’t not get distracted by my hard working brother. He worked. I took pictures. Thank you, Trey!!)
📷 2 - The laundry room opened into the kitchen.
📷 3 - God bless my brother. The stuff that fell out of the ceiling onto him... well, I’d like to think it was just 118 year old dust. 😬
📷 4 - Looking in from the kitchen after Trey got all the stuff off the walls in the laundry room....
📷 5 - More of Trey doing ALL THE WORK.
📷 6 - BAM!! Look at that view straight through to the front door!! This is how the house had been before the laundry room was put in. We almost didn’t take the wall down. We debated it, then decided we could always rebuild the wall if we really wanted to. So down it came! I swear we spent the rest of the day with our mouths hanging open. Opening up the foyer completely changed the feel of the house. It’s just beautiful.
📷 7 - a bit of a panoramic shot from the kitchen showing the foyer, the door into the dining room to the right and then the door to the side porch. And yeah, that’s Trey in the corner. Probably doing more work.
📷 8 - Finally, the view from the front door looking. Taking that wall down completely changed the feel of the house. I liked the house before, but then I totally fell in love when we opened up the entrance way. Just wow.
Glorious terraces. The Barons looking grand!
is the refurbishment and contemporary extension to a spectacular Victorian dwelling in Orwell Park, Dublin designed by the ever brilliant @aof_architects.
The project is detailed in the following excerpt from the architect's website http://www.aof.ie from where you can check out more of their amazing work.
The challenge was to restore the house to its original glory and to transform the low & dark garden level. The owners wanted their kitchen at this level so they could easily enjoy the garden. The solution was to lower the floor level. 1.5 meters below the existing level, a new concrete floor was formed across the full width of the house and extended out into the garden.
A clear open plan kitchen was created. Cross beams transfer the load of the return over head and enable a clear column less space. This space opens onto a terrace which then steps back up to the garden. The garden level has been transformed into a tall, bright space. The remainder of the house was refurbished simply.

Here is another old timey picture for you! This is J. W. Minnich. He is the one for which the house is named after. I did a lotnof research on this house and, apparently, there was another property here, but when he bought it he did extensive renovations to make the house what it is today. He was a business man (and a very good one apparently as he was one of the richest man in town), and he owned a cigar factory. Apparently, cigar manufacturing was all the rage in Dallastown at the time. He was born 1860, and died in 1940 (or was it 1941?). And according to a newspaper clipping that I found, he once lost his umbrella and it was a very big deal because the whole ordeal was published in the newspaper. Anyway...can I just draw your attention to the cane?? You guys, he has a cane, just for show, like what you see in movies!!! Isn't he dapper?

This recent project was a newly renovated Victorian so our focus was to highlight the modern updates while maintaining the home’s character.
