Who here loves the idea of getting your color or cut curated specifically for your head? But, on the flipside, who here also dreads the info on this product push before, during, and after the service? Sure you really might like Aveda products and think they smell really great. And you might think that they make your hair feel really nice too, but you can just run to Target after you leave and pick up some different shampoo and conditioner from your favorite store brand. But that’s not so!
If you look at some of the Suave shampoos, you’ll see some of them boast that their ingredient composition and feel is just like that of Aveda’s, specifically the Dry Remedy. Now if you are Dry Remedy lover like a lot of us here at BBCo, you know that not only is it sulfate free, but it utilizes babussu seed oil AND buriti fruit on top of the already moisturizing olive oil base to quench thirsty hair and give you irresistible shine.
Suave Almond and Shea butter shampoo contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate, or SLES. This compound has been known to often times be contaminated with 1,4 Dioxane which is a registered carcinogen. Not only that, but it’s a common skin irritant. Aveda uses Sodium Lauroy Methyl Isethoniate, which is a water soluble, coconut derived, sulfate free surfactant (and considered to be the safest on the market!) Suave also uses Cocamidopropyl Betaine as a surfactant in their shampoo. Tons of cases of contact dermatitis can be directly traced back to this compound. Actually, in 2004 this was the allergen of the year. But- you want it on your head right?
Quick note here- everything placed on the skin is absorbed into the bloodstream. Don’t believe me? Put garlic between your toes and in about five minutes you’ll taste it.
Last ingredient to investigate (other than the synthetic fragrance they use) is the dimethiconol. This is a hydroxylated synthetic silicone that is NON water soluble. Which translates to “builds up in the hair awfully quick.” Does anyone want a post going into detail on Dry Remedy now??? 😉 Remember, when your stylist is making a recommendation on take home it’s ONLY because they care!
F A L L: The season that reminds us how wonderful it is to let dead things go. —————-
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted. These past few months have been filled with self care and self discovery. One thing I am learning is that we are always evolving. The person we are today is not necessarily the person we are tomorrow. And I’m learning to love these transitions. Xox. 💋
