In Brussels it appears that our Indian summer is in full swing. But I was wondering if this term is still in fashion or if it’s fallen out of favour for political incorrectness. The Dutch use the term “nazomer” which means "late summer." In English, before Indian summer came into vogue, sometimes we called this "second summer." In Germany, the Netherlands and Eastern Europe, warm autumn streaks are also called "old wives' summer"—Altweibersommer in German and oudewijvenzomer in Dutch. In fact, the Dutch seem to have a lot of words for this phenomenon, including kranenzomer or crane summer. In many European countries, a November warm spell is called St. Martin's summer as his feast day is November 11. #unrelatedcaption
The main reason (maybe even the only) that I’d always return to Brussels is to eat a sandwich at Tonton Garby. I’m not a huge sandwich lover and don’t eat much bread in general (especially in the Netherlands) but if I could- I’d eat a sandwich from Tonton every single day. Not only will the guy make you the best sandwich of your life but he will make your day. He seems like one of the most positive and happy people I’ve ever met, really dedicated and passionate about making the best sandwich only for you. He makes each customer feel special and takes all the time to personalize it according to what you like best, which is also one of the reasons why there is a half an hour wait line. He has everything figured out. He gets his cheese from Italy and France, his chorizo from Spain, his bread from the best local bakery... He works alone and does everything by himself (including squeezing you fresh orange juice). Once you get to order, he’ll help you with picking a cheese you’ll like and tell you about some possible combinations. Even though there is a menu, I decided to stick with his recommendation for me. I’m glad I did as it was the best sandwich of my life. Soft goat cheese with cranberries, pear and chorizo. Just thinking about it makes me want to book a ticket to Brussels right now to dine there. The place is tiny and only has three tables. But Tonton Garby loudly says: in this place we share everything, if you don’t share you are small. So you decide to sit on that available seat next to a bunch of strangers, and due to the nice spirit everywhere around you are likely to soon make some friends.
Tonton Garby doesn’t care for this or any review. But I’m extremely glad he made us both happy.
