I was awake most of the night with the dog barking at the wind so I’m selecting this throw back to a gorgeous sunrise hike because sunrise hikes are my favorite hikes. I think next year my goal will be to do more sunrise hikes.
When I look for sunrise hikes, I first look at weather. I look for about 25-40% sky cover during sunrise. The mornings with 0% sky-cover are amazing just for star watching while hiking. The mornings with some cloud cover make for some amazing colors streaking through the sky. I also look for no rain, no fog.
Hiking by headlamp can be anxiety provoking at first. My first time, I was pretty much a mess and think I was being stalked by a bear. The stench on the air was strong. I had birds fly out of trees at my face when my headlamp spooked them. I had mice running over my feet. Most sunrise hikes since have been uneventful in the creature category. I also try to bring some friends along so I’m not going solo on these trips.
I plan enough time to arrive at the summit at least 30 minutes before sunrise. About 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after are amazing for colors, views and that hour window is a great time to pull out the jetboil and make a cup of coffee and some food and enjoy the best breakfast location you could possibly imagine.
It may take getting up early and losing some sleep time ... although so worth it! Plus there is always an opportunity for a nap later ;) Have you hiked for sunrise? If so... what are your tips and tricks? If not, would you do it?
Adventure is best when shared. And even better when you share hot beverages at your destination. Company of friends + coffee + cocoa + fine china tea cup = recipe for maximum warm up and joy flow.
So excited to finally share a hike and hot beverage with @grammb ❤️☕️ ❄️
I am so thankful every day for all of the people who cross my path on this journey of life - for a moment or for a lifetime. Each encounter and each connection means so very much to me. Sometimes I feel like I internalize and don’t vocalize how much my people mean to me. Life doesn’t have any guarantees and none of us know how much time we will get. Hug your people and tell them you are thankful for their part in your journey. ✨✨
Tag someone below that you are thankful for!
