One of my favorite hiking trips of 2018 was the hike up from Lærdal to the Rock of Thor. So many different moods on the way up. This one was a forest with a magical sunrise shining through it.⛰🇳🇴

The future is quickly consuming the old essence of Oslo, setting aside those proofs of an old city and turning them into 30-story buildings. It's future against past. . Besides the very interesting museums in Oslo preserving the old exploring tradition of the Vikings and nowadays-Norwegians, the city lacked that feeling of truthful culture. As a cosmopolitan city Oslo ingrains on everything but its roots. There's not even that many places to eat traditional Norwegian dishes there, and as I always say: a city that doesn't have space for its own traditional cuisine has lost its culture long ago. . I guess that's the main reason why old Norwegians and those living outside the metropolitan area of Oslo don't like the city that much. It's just like it isn't truly Norway. . My urge to get out from the city increased as I chatted again with my old roommate, Ann Kristin. Three years ago she told me about her reminiscence of moving to Oslo, it just wasn't for her, as was neither for me, and yet, nowadays the opportunities to start a career related to her field of studies brought her here. To the big city. . Wanna know what happened next? Go check my newest post in my Blog! All the while the Sun faded away and gave the moon and stars a space in the vault, the wind came harder and its freezing force increased. The purplish colours of the sunset and the bright white shine of the Opera House, working as a morning star on Earth reflecting on the water. . It made me, for at least a minute, forget the cold and just think about the beauty of such a view. Soon my trembling hands didn't help at all and my chattering teeth started to make everyone notice me as I walked over the promenade. My path led me to the downtown, to the Castle to be specific. . Walking across a large and straight street full of restaurants, bars and cafés that sheltered many people, both Norwegian and tourists, from the cold weather outside. . While my walk was being warmed by the heathers on every corner of such shops my hands and face recovered their senses once again. . Once in front of the Castle I stopped for a while just like I did before in front of the Opera House. It was beautiful, stunning, lovely. I turned around and stared at the downtown and its glowing lights. What was it? A modern city or a fairy tale city? A mixture perhaps? Again, this question came to my mind and again I couldn't really answer such thing. I didn't know what Oslo was really about. . Wanna know what happened next? Go check my newest post in my Blog! It's not uniform and aesthetically chaotic. It's not like London or New York, nor as Vienna or Paris. It's a common trend I found in Scandinavia, this pattern mixes architectural styles and then creates something different from others. It's not the gray harsh buildings of Helsinki or the fairytale quarters of Stockholm. It's this shining, symmetrical and cold style that uses both steel and glass as their main components. I wouldn't say that Oslo is trying to suppress and forget its past through the transformation of its body but to improve towards its goals to become, as I said before, a landmark in both Europe and the world, about how a modern city should look like. . While I walked towards the area that could be called “city center”, there's not actually one, the old palaces and mansions nowadays turned into shops, greeted me with their pastel colors and warm lights. The asphalt turned for a while into cobblestone and the lamps became street decorations rather than just lights. . Just as my eyes were looking at these streets the winds of the north made their entrance and with them the temperature finally went down. Way down. . Wanna know what happened next? The harbour makes its way to the view from the bus. A lot of high-rise buildings stand along the bay of the Oslo Fjord. All of them symmetrical and square, reflecting the orange setting sun and their windows illuminated by the lights inside of them. One by one, built or still on construction, line up taking the Opera House as the center of the landscape. . The billboards using slogans such as "NYC-Oslo" and "SoHo-Oslo" cleared up what I had on my mind. These tall towers, sheltering both international companies and wealthy individuals, are shaping Oslo into the New York City of Scandinavia. They are not trying to hide such goal but to make it clear to everyone. Oslo is pushing hard to become a landmark of modernity and future itself. . As I hop off the bus and take my tote bag, I walk under the still visible shadows of such giants around me. It feels a little bit like being in New York, never thought that Oslo would feel that way to be honest, and still it has its own identity. Though, diluted under such dreams of becoming a twin sister of the Big Apple. . Wanna know what happened next? Go check my newest post in my Blog!
