Are these two images the same? Did one artist happen to make... two?
As you might guess from our somewhat leading question, the answer is no. Elaine Sturtevant’s working practice is to remake artworks by more famous male artists: she creates endless imperfect copies, with the aim to problematise our understanding of ownership and patriarchal identity. Making this copy of Martial Raysse’s nouveau realist picture with his blessing, Sturtevant provokes a viewer. At first, you might think he made two images, then you might jump to thinking that she ripped him off and is trying to get away with it. Instead, she is attempting to make us then think of a third topic: what does originality even mean? Does context imbue art with all the meaning you need? If a woman made the work a man did, would she be praised as the same kind of icon? ... also, for those dying to know, hers is on the right. 😉
