Let all your fears run downstream. Experiences like these are what life is about. It’s exhausting and exhilarating and you eventually want it to be over but you also don’t want it to end. This week while volunteering with Land Meets Sea Camp for people with disabilities I:
- was trained to rescue people water skiing with disabilities (i.e., humans who are doing life differently but the same. Humans who may have had a stroke, brain injury, or spinal cord injury, which made them a quadriplegic or a paraplegic but still, fully human—full of character) by jumping off a jet ski. Cue heart racing adrenaline rushes. My favorite was seeing people try more advanced levels and pushing themselves to be better as well as watching people cruise around and cheering them on-doing the “impossible.” I recently watched Christopher Robbins in theaters and my favorite line was when Pooh said, “people say nothing is impossible but I do nothing everyday.” - experienced sweet moments between myself and the participants, the participants and their family/caregivers, and the community in general. Having a simple chat and finding humor in the moment was so significant this week.
- made connections with other volunteers by being open to new experiences and new people. Listening to others and asking questions about their interests and passions.
- ~It wasn’t all fun and games though.~ I had trails of bruisers from getting on and off the back of the jet ski; sunburnt eyes (yes, it’s a thing!) and swollen sunburnt lips from not being able to wear protection when “jumping” for hours; a wave hit a jet ski when I was helping someone in the water and instead of going in reverse the jet ski driver accidentally had it in forward and it went up my arm nearly reaching my head; and lastly, while sitting eating lunch next to a participant in a nifty wheelchair, the wheelchair came straight at me knocking me over as I tried get away from it when it finally stopped and I learned her lap dog “sometimes pushes the joystick mount.” Phew.
