Most preschool classes are limited 30 students. At the Tarach Preschool in Kakuma Refugee Camp 1300 learners aged 4-6 hail from 8 different countries. Class sizes range from an astonishing 70 up to 130 young ones per class with only one teacher. Here you can see founder and CEO, Kristine Pearson, demonstrating the Lifeplayer to refugee children. Despite not speaking English, the children responded enthusiastically to the @WriggleRhyme English-language songs from South Africa! #LifelineEnergyInKenya
On three different visits to Calvary School in Kibera Slum from 2016 to 2018, this striking little girl has caught my eye. In a dark classroom filled with Kenyan students, Michelle’s light skin and bright eyes seem to glow. Today, I was finally able to talk to her — I learned that her mother is Kenyan and her father is Australian. As I greeted her 2nd grade class, other students pointed saying “mzungu” which means “foreigner” — it’s a word we hear a hundred times each day here. I assumed the kids were calling me mzungu — and I wouldn’t mind — because they’re 7 years old and it’s true, I’m a foreigner. But they were calling Michelle a foreigner. And I didn’t like that. She seemed embarrassed and hung her head over the desk that she shared with two other students. I leaned in and asked Michelle if she’d like for me to take a photo of her and she jumped up as if I’d offered her a truck full of ice cream. She lit up in front of my camera. I turned the screen to show her how stunning she is. She giggled and grinned as I shuffled through the portraits. I hope Michelle begins to learn how beautiful she is — even though she doesn’t look like anyone else in her world. More than that — I hope Michelle knows and believes that she’s loved by her Creator who makes no mistakes — and who knit her together perfectly. • • #vscoafrica #travelphotography #vscotravel #vscokenya #facesobsessed #africa #agameofportraits #childrenshome #childrensministry #everydayafrica #globalportraits #portraitsfromtheworld #igkenya #igafrica #igtravel #ignairobi #igtraveller #kenya #kenyan #australian #kiswahili #mzungu #kibera #kiberastories #kiberaslums #nairobi #nairobikenya #portraitpage #travelblogging #travelportrait

Today a South African man called Thato Senganga Molosankwe begins his 10 years journey rounding Africa to unite African men against women and child abuse. His walk is inspired by his hero's long walk to freedom amongst others. When not there physically, we will be with you in spirit. May your goal be realised Thatos. It's one thing to read about a classroom with one teacher and 200 students - it's another see it. Yesterday at Mogadishu Primary in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, we came across not one, but several classrooms of 200 pupils. With girls on one side and boys on the other, students sit on the floor in the desert heat for hours on end trying to learn. At least our Lifeplayer can lend a hand as a second teacher in the classroom. #LifelineEnergyInKenya

This moment right here was one of the highlights of this trip, I could not believe I was finally on my way to Kunta Kinte island. A place who's story I learned through Roots and put on my to see list. #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
Few years back I stumbled on 1st episode of a series called Roots and got hooked immediately and right there I decided I would visit the Gambia to see the village where the man who refused his colonial name despite being beaten up was born. "Juffure has a population estimate of 5,800. Nearby is Albreda village, both are Mandinka and Serer tribal villages." #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
This week Kristine and International @TomHanksDay co-founder, @kevin_turkey_bacon , are at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in far northwest Kenya. More than 185,000 mainly South Sudanese call the camp home. Kristine and Kevin are staying in the UN compound and will spend their time conducting research, training and visiting schools. Lifeline Energy donated Lifeplayer units to the UNHCR and met first thing with local teachers, who were extremely enthusiastic about using it as a teaching tool. Most of the 800 teachers in the camp are Kenyan. #LifelineEnergyInKenya

We walked to the market to buy ingredients to cook lunch for a family of 9 and excluding rice everything (onions, fish, pepper, 1cup of oil, tomato paste, etc) cost R28.00 #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
If we are not eating mangoes and cashew fruits we are roasting the crushing to cashew nuts😍 #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
This is a soup made with unripe mangoes we eat it with rice for breakfast. The first time eating cooked mango was last week in Niaguis (a village in Senegal). We were sitting under a mango tree in the dark and I was handed something which felt warm and thought it was because the sun was very hot that day. I knew it was different the moment I took my first bite and that's when I was told it's boiled mango. #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
"The July 22nd Arch is a monument that spans the Independence drive, the road that leads into the Gambia's capital". It greets you as you enter Banjul from Serrekunda right after passing the national assembly. #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller

This morning, we’re driving away from The Hope Centre and headed for Nairobi. The past 6 weeks have been filled with more joy than I could ever explain - in a place that has felt like home for almost 3 years. We have seen children healed from disease, welcomed thirteen new smiling faces, and experienced love and service in unimaginable ways. My heart swells with gratitude for every person who made this summer possible. These children truly feel like family to me, and I’m still fumbling to understand how this wild ride is actually my life. God has been so good. I bless the rains down in Africa.

How beautiful is Karura Forest? This incredible urban forest situated in Nairobi, Kenya, exists because the great conservationist, Wangari Maathai, saved it back in the late 90's. Tomorrow we start at Kakuma! #LifelineEnergyInKenya

Me: guys I can't seem to be able to connect to the internet whenever we are home. (They ignored me for a while and I complained again few hours later 🙈) Them: let's go get connection at the cashews. So I'm posting this from the pictured position which I now come to alone whenever I need to access internet. Strong connection but not ideal as the place is isolated. So Kanuma is turning out to be my place of disconnect and relax. Palama setlhare taken literally. #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
Welcome to Gambia This is where locals gather for national meetings I'm told (DRC has the same thing). I spend about 1.5hours at the border because of some document only people at land borders know of because the embassy didn't tell me about it. I was apparently supposed to have printed and brought it along so now had to pay for it (I didn't). What I liked though is that somehow most of the officials seem to know what they are doing and there is a level of professionalism, as much as the customs official wasn't wearing uniform he didn't take offence when I responded with "who are you?" When he asked my name and whereabouts. He instead clearly explained and went on to show his badge and carried out his custom duties respectfully. #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
Here like in Guinea Bissau and Guinea I've seen wells widely used, other houses have taps for drinking water and only use the freshwater from wells for irrigation and domestic purposes. #VisaFreeTravelForAfricans #AfricaIsHome #AfricanOverlandTraveller
