Sometimes we all end up in situations we‘d rather not be. One of them could be when we are the only person to save another persons life until medical help arrives. These situations will always be uncomfortable but you can manage the, with so much more confidence if you know how to handle, them. We all learn it for the drivers license, these horrible and long courses we haaave to take and the next week all is forgotten. So here is a little reminder to stay on top of things if you ever (and I hope not) will find yourself in this situation.
1. in case of an accident make sure that the scene you’re standing at is SAFE for you and your momentary patient and mark the scene so that others can notice you from far away and won’t run you over. NEVER repeat after me, NEVER play the hero and put yourself in danger. An injured helper can’t help
2. Call an ambulance. Very important cause you can’t do it all on your own. There are 5 questions to answer on the phone so help can be sent immediately. Where did it happen? What happened? How many injured? What’s the injury? Wait for further questions
3. AFTER successfully calling for help you start first aid measures. First check if the person is reacting to you, are they conscious, are they breathing? Always put them on their side (recovery position)so they can’t suffocate on potential vomit etc. If they don’t breathe you can start CPR (heart massage to the rhythm of „staying alive“ for 30 times, breathe through nose or mouth of patient 2 times) if the person is conscious (again) you may try to tend the injuries and try to stop any bleeding. Do NOT take out foreign bodies from the patient. You don’t know where it’s stuck and you don’t know what it may cause. The patient could technically die from bleeding out. So always put the bandage around the object.
Stay save and stay calm, knowledge is key 💪🏼
