🌎📸👫 | LAVA BOMB BROKE MY (TRIPOD) HEAD
To see a strombolian eruption in person has been my wish for at least 20 years now... And as in many other cases, Japan delivered in a spectacular way. We were there during the time of crazy activity of all volcanos on Ring of fire, which was a direct result of Pacific plate sinking event. I'm sure you heard about Hawaii and Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala, but nobody talked about Sakurajima. Let me paint you a picture. Sakurajima is already the most active volcano in the world, erupting on average 1-2 times each day in the last couple of decades. Now multiply that with newfound crust pressure and "Earth anger" and you get a crazy amount of activity. Almost never ending plinian eruptions (ash covered us multiple times) with some up to 8-10 km high and very dangerous explosive strombolian eruptions which you couldn't even see because of all the ash. It's during one of that sneaky eruptions that one rouge lava bomb hit me directly in tripod head, seconds after I removed the camera to hide it from all the dust. And broke it (see stories for behind the scenes)...
So there was some price to be paid, but I think it was well worth it to get an image like that in the end. Nature is so majestic I can't even begin to describe how I was feeling watching a whole mountain on fire and sky covered with static lightning. It definitely is a surreal experience.
