I’ve been asked a lot lately about what key staple items are needed to make your wardrobe more versatile.
It’s actually a big question as it takes a meaningful assessment of your style, lifestyle, climate and needs to give you a good answer.
But the 80/20 rule is a good start. Your wardrobe should be 80% essential and functional items that you love wearing. This 80% are the foundations of any outfit. Think jeans, basic tees, basic cardigans, a denim jacket.
Allow 20% of your wardrobe space for fun. These are the items that allow you to experiment and express yourself. For example, items of colour, print, and a little flair. Maybe a bright scarf, or sparkly cami.
Err too much towards the “fun” and you can end up spending too much money and effort “keeping up” with trends and maintaining your wardrobe.
Falling into the habit of only purchasing “essentials” can leave you feeling like your wardrobe lacks personality or that your on outfit repeat.
Having the 80/20 balance will allow you to elevate your style and feel special in your outfits whilst knowing you’ll always have a useful and functional canvas to fall back on.
Most clients I meet lean heavily towards one or the other. And as always... rules are made to be broken 💥 👊🏻
Do you feel like you have the 80/20 balance? Do you have more staple items? Or more fun items?
