Chinese New Year is coming up soon, 5 February to be exact and we welcome the Year of the Pig.
Uncle needs to celebrate early so what’s better than having a makan at Bunga Raya with one of his favourite food truck family, The Rolling Pin’s Gordon Kong and Yina Yang. They make the best food truck dumplings, including Uncle’s favourite, vegan Buddha Delights. We had a giggle when Uncle produced the pomelo gifts that’s traditional during Chinese New Year.
Aunty Rita made sure we had the right dishes for Gordon and Yina. We started with a must-have, the Ling Collar Vermicelli Soup, wondrous battered deep-fried ling collar, in a clear soup packed with flavours from kiam chye (preserved mustard greens), ginger, preserved plum (umeboshi) and tempered with milk. We all enjoyed this soup.
Gordon has fond memories of his time in Malaysia and remembered Wat Tan Hor (eggy rice noodles). Bunga Raya lifts Wat Tan Hor to the next level with this Ying Yong version, where crispy rice vermicelli is combined with the rice noodles all bursting with wok hei.
No meal at Bunga Raya is complete without the Hainanese Chicken Rice, one of the best in town, complete with the chilli ginger dip.
Aunty Rita was adamant we try the crispy squid cooked in the house-made XO sauce. Aun#ty
backs her dishes. The squid was a cracker.
Uncle is so glad Gordon & Yina love the meal. They might bring the family to have the Yee Sang, the prosperity toss that welcomes in the Chinese New Year.
