down below you can find my long and rambling @goodreads
review, but if you rather like it short and to the point take away this: little is a fantastic book, captivating from the very first page until the very last one, with stunning illustrations and tangible characters and i recommend that you get yourself a copy instantly!
i think this book is extraordinary. it’s this fact that had me struggling immensely while writing this review. i very seldom say this about a book, but i think i love everything about this, i really do, and it came as a surprise, because while i didn't expect this book to be bad, of course, i didn't expect it to keep me so captivated from the very first page on, either. i honestly just expected it to be a run-of-the-mill book. but no, it’s not this at all. but still, for a review just to say i love everything about this novel is a bit meagre. so I’ll just start by saying something i didn't like, which is that this book came to an end. aren't i clever? i would have loved to read more and more and more of anna marie grosholtz, marie or simply little, though. but a life ends and so a book about a life must end as well, i guess. truth is, carey, although taking some creative liberty considering real life events and people in his novel, created a very compelling character, a character you simply have to love a little and admire a lot and want to get to know about endlessly. but not only marie was wonderfully to read about; i loved and hated so many of the characters that crossed her way — i was angry and sad and elated and i loved and i loathed with a passion and i was never not rooting for marie. carey’s writing pulled me in and didn't let me go; his chapters were so short and poignant that i couldn't ever just stop after one, or even five. i wanted to keep going, i wanted to stumble upon more drawings and illustrations, which are so very exquisitely done, i just wanted more of everything in general, plain and simple. this book is well worth a read and even a re-read, i’m certain. go pick it up now! 🌿
