Here we go, Don Angie’s famous Lasagna for two!
It’s been on the list for a long time and thanks to @mister.limon
I finally got a chance to try it.
I could bore you by writing about how lovely the place is, first. How I liked the beautiful modern bistro style design with flattering, warm lighting. But why would I do that? ;-) It’s all about the pasta, the lasagna, to be precise. Since Don Angie opened its doors last fall, anyone remotely interested in the NY restaurant scene will have seen more than just one post of lasagna flowers leaving long mozzarella stretches as they’re being pulled out of the tray. And this leads directly to the essence of the dish - the lasagna is all about the melted mozzarella, there is a lot of it, a lot! If you like it, you will be in heaven, immediately.
I, on the other hand (call me a Euro or whatever), prefer my lasagna with béchamel - the real Italian way. I also prefer the pasta, bolognese, and béchamel to be balanced. Here, I didn’t even taste the pasta, I was eating bolognese flavored melted cheese. @thethirstysicilian
asked, if that was a bad thing... Up to you to decide.
So, would I go again? Yes, definitely, but with an open mind for more of the playful, instagram-ready Italian-American cooking, as the New York Magazine put it quite accurately - like the zebra striped Buffalo Milk Caramelle with Cantaloupe and Black Sesame, for example.
