Our kids are not into meat right now. They get lots of other protein sources though so I am not too worried about it. You win some, you lose some. I 💜 meatloaf but apparently my kids are not fans! The occasional cracked tile, month-old local newspapers, the smell of oil, and those flappy plastic strips that we’ve all been whacked with at least once! These places are small businesses usually run by the Mum, Dad and their kids after school on Fridays so each order is their livelihood. So what makes them Above & Beyonders is the fact that I have experienced on multiple occasions that they throw in extra potato cakes for good faith. Given everything is so exact now, no one carries cash anymore so we are charged exactly $20.32 cents to our card. BUT it’s those magical Fish n Chip shops that will round it down to $20 because they’re good humans. How could I resist the 25% off #lecreuset at @millyskitchen today #bastilleday 🇫🇷 . I 💙 my original skillet and casserole dish that I lugged back from Paris over 15 years ago. Previously I have paid a lot of money for supposed quality non stick pans, cared for them exactly as the instructions and they didn’t last like my Le Creuset has. So an investment into a beautiful 30cm pan today, will see me right for a very, very long time 🍳🥩🍗🥘🍴. Apparently the lid can double as a pizza stone 🍕! The last few Fridays I’ve shared tips for meal planning, but what happens when your plans fall through? . You get home later than planned, forget to defrost the meat, or just can’t possibly cook dinner tonight after the day you’ve had. So often, this can mean your family is ordering pizza or going out to eat… which can be discouraging (& expensive!) when you’ve spent all that time and effort meal planning! . Today’s #saraismealplanning tip is simple: Have easy meals on hand. . These probably won’t be as healthy or as inexpensive as your normal meals, but they’re very likely healthier *and* less expensive than eating out, so you’ll still be winning. (Bonus: they won’t delay bedtime, which is the last thing you need when you’ve had a long day!) . The key to these meals is that they are easy & quick, don’t require forethought like defrosting something hours ahead of time, and won’t go bad quickly. . Here are a few easy meal ideas to get you started: . •chicken nuggets •soup (canned or homemade and frozen - just heat it up and serve!) •frozen pizza •fish sticks •salmon & sweet potatoes (frozen salmon thaws quickly & 🍠 last a long time in the pantry) •pasta & meat sauce (in a pinch, ground beef can be cooked from frozen. Add jarred red sauce, boil some water, & dinner’s practically done) •pesto pasta (We love Costco’s refrigerated pesto. Just add to cooked pasta ✅) •cheese tortillas •cereal 🙌 . I’m a huge fan of meal planning & have prioritized it… and I’ve still never had a week go exactly according to my meal plan. Diet culture is killing your progress 💣 . I get it. It seems like everyday there’s a new diet trend and it’s hard to keep up. I mean really, it would take days to name all the fad diets that have accumulated. So how do you know what you should and shouldn’t be eating? . It doesn’t have to be as complicated as it may feel like it is. It’s quite simple in the beginning- don’t eat like a jerk. Think about it. If you’re drinking soda everyday, greasy fast food regularly, a ton of processed food, etc., do you think you’re going to hit the health and physique goals you have? Probably not. . Now I can’t lie, there is a lot that goes into good nutrition and sculpting the body you want. However, it all starts with the basics: eat whole food, get enough protein, don’t drink your calories and don’t eat, and don’t keep eating when your body says stop. Most people are off to a good start by cutting out the majority of processed foods and drinks being consumed. . After you’ve started with the basics, then you can dive a little deeper into macros and what not. Remember that supplements ARE NOT necessary but are compliments to an already healthy diet and exercise regimen. . So what are the takeaways? You don’t have to follow the trendy diet, eat your veggies and lean meat, drink water and reduce your caloric drinks, focus on whole foods (which means you’re probably gonna have to cook more), and do your research! . Farewell Favas! Peace-out peas! As much as it hurts me to have to bid adieu, the time has come. So to celebrate, we’re sautéing up these yummies with one of my favorite garden treats…crispy, fried mint leaves. You can pretty much fry any herb as a tasty topping, but these mint leaves partner with the peas and broad beans like best buds. All you need to do is wash and dry some mint leaves…they must be completely dry. In a saucepan, heat up a 1/4” of vegetable oil. The oil is ready for frying once it sizzles. Drop a few mint leaves in at a time and fry for 10-15 seconds on each side or until the leaf takes on a stained-glass look. Dry on a paper towel or newspaper. Lightly sprinkle with a smidge of salt. If the leaves are browning, the oil is too hot. Sauerkraut needs no introduction. This batch is guarenteed to be filled with tons of friendly bacteria as it was made with love (thanks @caitierose7 💕). Sometimes referred to as probiotics, the correct term for the bacteria in fermented foods is ‘live-active cultures’. These friendly bacteria may have a role in obesity management, reducing insulin resistance and mood disorders including depression and anxiety in rat studies. Eating fermented foods is a great way to ensure your guts are being exposed to friendly bacteria. If you don’t have access to homemade sauerkraut the best place in town is @greencuisineveg for unpasteurized kraut. Another way to boost gut health is to eat the food your friendly bacteria like, these are known as prebiotics or high fibre foods. I dressed this salad with an apple cider vinegar based dressing for even more beneficial bacteria. Thanks to my veggie box from @littlemountainfarm getting all this goodness in is an easy task. This week was spring onion, difference lettuce varieties, cilantro, edible flowers, kale, cucumber and zucchini 🥗
Super quick and easy cauliflower rice bowl for youuuuuu!!!🤗 ・ I cooked up some ground turkey in the frying pan and added in my cauliflower rice, crisped that up then added some chopped bell peppers and cherry tomatoes🍅 ・ When it was in my bowl I added some shredded cheese, then dolloped on some salsa and the same sauce I had on my sweet potato fries from the other day! Fully loaded vegan sloppy joe-😍⭐️🌱that’s what’s for dinner. . How this dietitian makes a meal: Start with intended ingredients ⭐️v8 juice ⭐️red bell pepper ⭐️yellow bell pepper ⭐️textured vegetable protein ⭐️garlic ⭐️chives ⭐️cumin ⭐️chickpeas ⭐️would’ve been a jalapeño if I wouldn’t have forgot it! -I added a little flour to thicken the sauce since it is in fact juice. When this didn’t work it got a new ingredient- ⭐️yes quinoa! Soaked up the excess like a charm and was delish!!!! I decided to throw on these radish sprouts as well cuz they’re beautiful and amazing!! . I crock potted this thing about 4 hours. . Fun fact: I literally haven’t owned a salt shaker in about 5 years. I use v8 because it has more flavor and less sodium than other commercial sauces. Who wants some smoked lemon butter chicken quarter legs? My 5yr old loves them! I did a dry rub overnight with pepper, salt, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, oregano, thyme, coriander, and orange peel.
