Evening walk though Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex...13 cemeteries make up this interesting panoply of grave markers and headstones of Alexandria residents for over the past 200 years. Austere Colonial-era headstones gave way to stones bearing carvings with religious or fraternal meaning. Tall obelisks and life-size statues of angels appeared in the mid and late 19th-century, followed by the smaller, more uniform headstones of the 20th century.
