POLLEN PANTS 👖 // Pollen is electrostatically collected when fuzzy honeybees visit flowers to consume nectar. This critical food source is then pushed onto their pollen baskets (called corbiculae). It’s where we get the expression the ‘bees knees’. Look closely at this video and you will see large orange/yellow pollen loads being brought back to the hive. According to Bee Informed Partnership (2012) given a diverse floral environment, honeybees will collect nearly DOUBLE the pollen, when compared to a monoculture environment. This is why 100% of our hives are in natural countryside environments away from industrial agriculture. So why is it important for bees to have many different types of pollen? Pollen is directly tied to brood development and bee health. The nutritional profile of the nectar and pollen of each flower is quite different. Nectar is varied in sugar concentrations from 5% to 92%. Pollen has varied protein amounts from 5% to 40%. Pollen must contain at least 20% protein to fulfill the nutritional requirement of bees. What’s in pollen? Protein, fats, amino acids, carbohydrates, minerals, enzymes, vitamins, pigments and other trace components. There are 20 amino acids that are necessary for bee life: 10 of these amino acids can be manufactured by their bodies, but the remaining 10 must be acquired through pollen. (Cornell 2018)
It is critical for bees to forage on many different types of flowers to fulfill their nutritional needs. 🌸🐝🌼🐝🌺 .

Poppies for Remembrance Day from the fioritura (wild flower meadows) of Mount Sibillini National Park in Norcia, Italy with the medieval hill village of Castelluccio in the distance. There in July 2016 just before the dreadful earthquakes in the region.
Turned a rather neglected and poorly designed pond into something a little more pleasing to the eye. Not a bad 2.5 days work.

Excited to share this my latest 3'x4' fairy tale portrait. Very grateful for the opportunity and a challenge. I was never drawn to painting flowers before....too much fuss I thought. I didn't want to be bothered. I originally proposed to my client a butterfly landed on a ONE single flower, because I thought that's about all the flowers I can handle...only one.
But they had a clear vision of a whole meadow of flowers. Sure, no problem I said, of course, as I somehow instantly got this headache behind my eyes.......but after some struggle at the beginning I found my grove, and can now say with confidence that I like, no LOVE painting flowers. As long as they don't have to be anatomically correct, and I can make up few of my own I will be happy to paint them

Nearly Friday folks, nothing like a walk across a field. They’ve brought the cows in of the meadows, where they are kept most of the year to keep the wild flowers in check.
One of a pair of 20x20cm paintings . Message me for details or check out my Facebook Page Blue Dog Art@deecowardartist.
Both pieces are inspired by summer evenings picnicking in wild flower meadows surrounded by the scent of flowers and the buzz of insects ❤️
Urban wild-flower meadow in the corner of a park on my route to work, thanks to the Friends of Turnham Green and Hounslow Council. So lovely to see Daucus carota seedheads while commuting

The finished pond refurb from last week. I’m not a fountain guy in all honesty but it’s the customers choice and you have to respect that. All plants were given their pre Winter chop, hence there’s not much sign of them.
