Today was one of the harder and dumber rides I have ever done in my life trying to circumnavigate lake atitlan in Guatemala. I checked a handful of Google street view images and only saw pavement and the ridewithgps course I made didn't look to have any insane climbs with the big ones averaging 11 percent or so. Boy was all of that wrong. About half my day was spent on dirt, brutal cobbles and pothole and mud covered roads. And the climbs. Omg. The first one had me walking once or twice with 30 degree pitches on what I would call wet, unkempt fire roads for 3km or so. And then the final climb that rose 4000ft from the lake into the high mountains in a 2 part climb. I spent a solid hr or 2 paperboying up that mountain, climbing at literally 35 rpm and 4 mph, running out of water for an hour, then following my incorrect navigation system into a dead end at a pig pen and getting to climb a bonus 500 ft or so. I was so cracked. But pretty incredible views and some awesome taste of very different cultures riding through the villages around #lakeatitlan
. 10 out of 10 would do again with an appropriately geared cross bike and more local currency in my pocket.
