72° & 14mph winds...such a lovely day in the park!
Watching the eclipse from the park.
Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Orville and Wilbur lived and tested their aircraft late summer thru autumn of 1901, 1902 & 1903 in what was then called Kitty Hawk. Fun facts: the memorial is on a hill that used to be a sand dune. They walked their prototypes up that dune 1000s of times, but the first and subsequent flights took place on the flat field below the dune, on a thin steel rail they constructed because the sand was too mushy. They lived and worked in two wood shacks yards away from the testing site. They flew four times their first successful day and then the plane was caught by a gust of wind, rolled and was damaged beyond repair.

"Some day Congress will erect a monument here to these Wrights." Byron R. Newton, 1908
In 1908, five years after the historic first flight at Kitty Hawk, the Wright Brothers returned to the Outer Banks to test a new version of their airplane. Reporters hid nearby to watch the brothers fly. Reporter Byron R. Newton's prediction about the Wrights came true 19 years later when Congress established the area as a national memorial.

“I like to think about it now; I like to think about that first airplane the way it sailed off in the air at Kill Devil Hills that morning, as pretty as any bird you ever laid your eyes on. I don’t think I ever saw a
prettier sight in my life.”
-John T. Daniels said in 1927 reflecting on the Wrights' first flight made on December 17, 1903. #WrightBrothers #quotable #qotd #wrightbrosnps #outerbanks #obx #firstflight #nps
I found this guy in the hangar during the kite program.
It's a glasses kind of day.
