Scene from a recent "Disaster Simulation" here at YSN where a tornado had hit a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. Students were released into the room to triage the scene, which was filled with a combination of live actors and manikins in various stages of injury or need. Simulation is an effective way to bridge the gap between the classroom and clinical practice. #yalewestcampus #yale #yalemed #yalemidwifery #simulation #yalegsas #yalefaculty #nurse #nurselife #nursepractitioner #nursesofinstagram #sim

Polly Huynh is an MSN student specializing in psychiatric-mental health nursing. The daughter of Chinese-Vietnamese refugees, Polly grew up in southern Massachusetts with a love for learning and family. Her goal is to bring psychiatric care to primary care clinics and have it become the norm to see a psychiatric specialist. She believes that seeking psychiatric care is still highly stigmatized, and she wants to close the gap between the idea of having a visit with your PCP and psychiatric treater. “I have seen the life changing effects of having a psychiatric treater and this can help a lot of individuals in the community. I am really looking forward to the specialty years of the program since we don’t get to see a lot of psych in the first year. I think I’ll really enjoy the experience!” #yale #yalepsych #yalemed #yalealumni #yalegsas #yalefaculty #psychiatry #annualfund #give #nurse #psychiatrynurse #yalewestcampus

Read the fascinating story of Maria Haslip ‘20. Maria was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia, where she received her masters of science in biophysics from Petersburg Polytechnic University and worked in the field of medical genetics. She studied molecular cardiology, and in 2000, received her PhD in biochemistry. Maria’s university course took six years, the last two years of which she spent working on the molecular biology of cardiovascular diseases. She worked in the first human molecular biology lab in the former Soviet Union. However, she always wanted to pursue opportunities in the United States, eventually fulfilling her dream by taking up a position with the National Institute of Health in 2001. She became a United States citizen in 2012. As well as working at the NIH, she worked at Yale University for ten years, and for a small biotech company developing an immune vaccine against Hepatitis B. She says she has not regretted at all switching her career to nursing, where she can continue her scientific research in a new setting. #yale #yalewestcampus #yalegsas #yalemed #yalemedicine #yalehealth #ynhh #nurse #nurselife #nursingscience #yalealumni

Meet James Darden IV ‘19! “I am currently in my first semester of my specialty year at YSN, and I have been enjoying the change of pace from GEPN. The variety of opportunities at Yale are beyond what I could have expected, and I have now found myself extending beyond my previous limits in many different domains. I have been working as a research assistant, teaching assistant, and I have taken on two roles in the student government. My evolution as a student and leader has expanded beyond what I previously thought was possible, and I am grateful for the opportunity and fortune to be attending this program. My dream as a nurse practitioner is to function as a clinician, leader, and researcher in the realm of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. Yale is the pinnacle of knowledge pursuit, as is reflected in our motto “Lux et Veritas”, “Light and Truth”. My thirst for knowledge will never be quenched, but I feel in good company every day when I walk through the doors of YSN.” #yale #yalegsas #yalefaculty #yalewestcampus #nurses #nursesofinstagram #nurse #msn #whynursing #yalealumni

“We've heard a lot about climate recently and rightly so -- it's important. It's important for senior leadership to talk about it, but it's critical at the level of departments and research groups too, for it's there -- whatever else is going on in the wider world -- that you spend most of your time, and where you, as mentors and leaders, will have the biggest impact. . . [A]s abstract as "climate change" sounds, you can make a difference to your own "micro-climates." Now, perhaps it sounds too idealistic to put into practice. But I know that some of you already work like this, and many others want to. And if there's one thing I've learned from working with Yale students, they live up to your expectations and surpass them.” -Claire Bowern, Professor of Linguistics, winner of the 2018 Graduate Mentor Award in the Social Sciences #YaleGSAS2018 #YaleGSAS

“I feel an extreme connectedness to people because of their wish to belong and to have an impact despite their vulnerability. I feel that we all have experienced at some level the need to have a voice, and having our voices be heard is not always easy, nor is finding the tools to make our voices heard. So, I find extreme satisfaction in figuring out who my trainees are and what they want to say and how to bring them there.” -Valentina Greco, Associate Professor of Genetics, Dermatology, and Cell Biology, winner of the 2018 Graduate Mentor Award in the Natural Sciences #YaleGSAS2018 #YaleGSAS

Tell Us Your Story: Ian Althouse, of Old Lyme, Connecticut, will graduate in May with a Ph.D. in Spanish. Althouse’s graduate research investigated representations of queerness in novels by Latin American authors affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. His dissertation specifically identified how these authors treated the aesthetics of queerness as part of the symbols of the novel, marking a departure from the political agendas of queer marginalization in earlier writers. In 2015, Althouse was the Grand Prize winner of Yale’s Online Education Innovation Grant competition. That same year, he collaborated with the @yaleartgallery to design a program for the Intermediate Spanish II curriculum, to move students out of the classroom and into the gallery to practice Spanish. Althouse attributes his success to the staff at Yale’s @yalecls and the @yalectl who provided him constant support to develop innovative face-to-face and online courses. As a McDougal Fellow with the CTL, Althouse also led graduate student teaching development workshops for many years. In his new position at @columbia , Althouse is delighted to continue shaping the instructional practices of graduate students and future faculty as the Assistant Director of Graduate Student Programs and Services at the @columbiactl . #YaleGSAS2018 #TellUsYourStory #YaleGSAS #Yale #Yale2018
Tell Us Your Story: Michael Sierra-Arévalo of Texas is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology. Since arriving in New Haven in 2012, he has merged research and practice in his studies of police, firearms, and street violence. In addition to his multi-city dissertation research on how police officers’ perceptions of danger influence their behavior, Michael coordinated the research arm and evaluation of @projectlongevityct , a focused deterrence program related to significant declines in New Haven gun violence. His time at Yale gave his access to world-class scholars and resources, allowing him to learn about the social world from experts in law, political science, psychology, and public policy. Perhaps more importantly, Michael notes that he has been privileged to meet fellow scholars whom he now calls friends, and who will be a part of his life long after he leaves Yale and begins his new position as an Assistant Professor at @rutgersu School of Criminal Justice. #YaleGSAS2018 #TellUsYourStory #YaleGSAS #Yale #Yale2018

Tell Us Your Story: Matthew Longcore of Connecticut is a candidate for the M.A. in Archaeological Studies. As a recipient of the Michael Coe Fieldwork Fund, he participated in an excavation project led by the State of Connecticut archaeologist. The site in South Glastonbury, Connecticut dates back to the mid-17th century and is an important historic period archaeological site representing one of the earliest English settlements of the Connecticut River Valley. Matthew’s interest in Collegiate Gothic architecture developed into a research project in which he analyzed the stained glass windows crafted by artist G. Owen Bonawit at Yale’s Hall of Graduate Studies. The study was conducted using handheld portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF), a non-destructive technique for chemical analysis of artifacts. His master’s thesis “Dreaming Spires” focused on the medieval English inspired Gothic architecture on American campuses built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the buildings of architect James Gamble Rogers at @yale . Matthew has enjoyed an amazing journey as a graduate student and looks forward to staying connected to Yale after graduation. #YaleGSAS2018 #TellUsYourStory #YaleGSAS #Yale #Yale2018
Tell Us Your Story: Justine Wiesinger of Maryland studies Japanese film and theater related to the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster. At Yale, she worked with tremendously knowledgeable faculty who encouraged her to push her thinking as far as possible. She was awarded a @the_fulbright_program Scholarship in 2015 that allowed her to live and research in Japan, where she met playwrights and filmmakers and viewed their work as it was being created, developing key relationships she hopes will last for years to come. She learned to keep pushing the borders of her comfort zone, working directly with the great actor Nakadai Tatsuya when he visited Japan. Outside of school, Justine performed in plays such as 'Hamlet' and the first all-female production of 'Cabaret,' and she wrote her first play, which will be given a staged reading in North Carolina this summer. She is looking forward to starting her new job as Assistant Professor of Japanese Language and Culture at @batescollege next fall. #YaleGSAS2018 #TellUsYourStory #YaleGSAS #Yale #Yale2018
