Back at the after the holidays and judging the Wildscreen Panda Photography Awards in Bristol. Despite some obligations I couldn’t resist going through some more frames from my recent visit to my friend Flamingo Bob on the island in Curaçao. Bob is a Caribbean flamingo, from the Dutch island of Curaçao. His life took a dramatic turn when he flew into a hotel window, leaving him severely concussed. He was cared for by my cousin, Odette Doest @vetdoest , a local vet who also runs a wildlife rehabilitation centre and conservation charity – the Fundashon Dier en Onderwijs Cariben (FDOC) @fdoccuracao. Existing disabilities meant Bob couldn’t be released, but instead he became ambassador for FDOC, which educates locals about the importance of protecting the island’s wildlife. Arthritis in his feet is causing him difficulties to walk but he feels very comfortable in the water. The story about Bob was recently published by National Geographic who are currently celebrating ‘the year of the bird’. Follow me @jasperdoest , @vetdoest and @fdoccuracao for more images of Flamingo Bob who is slowly becoming #instafamous as the animal ambassador of Fundashon Dier en Onderwijs Cariben (FDOC).
The hornbills are a bird bunch known for big beaks, and this red-billed family member is no different. In fact, hornbills boast fused cervical vertebrae to help support those oversized appendages. Amazing anatomy aside, they also rely on nest “incarceration” to keep chicks safe: the female and progeny are sealed up in a tree cavity, and the male hustles to make regular food deliveries! *Fun fact: The Lion King's pompous "Zazu" was a red-billed hornbill.* #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #birdsofinstagram #hornbills #redbilledhornbill
2018 has been named the year of the bird by National Geographic and more than 100 organizations that are joining forces for 12 months of storytelling and science to examine how our changing environment is impacting birds. #Caturday A genetic study in 2007, and later confirmed in 2017, concluded that all domestic cats are descendants from Near Eastern Wildcats, having diverged around 8000 BC in the Middle East. So your cat is a natural hunter for sure. With an estimated 85.8 million cats in the United States, with tens of millions as outdoor cats, it is estimated these outdoor cats kill approximately 2.4 billion birds every year. Doesn’t seem possible? With each cat doing it’s part, the numbers add up quick. So keep that hunter indoors to help protect bird populations. According to the American Bird Conservancy, household cats have contributed to the extinction of 33 species. #calicotabby
With all the attention Flamingo Bob is getting; you’d almost forget the incredible work @vetdoest & @fdoccuracao are doing for other species on the island. @vetdoest often gets injured wild animals at her practice and works hard to rehabilitate them. These two pelicans were beaten up by local fishermen and wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild. Therefore @vetdoest added these two characters to her team of wildlife educators to teach local children about wildlife conservation and animal welfare. And in case you haven’t heard about Bob yet: Bob is a Caribbean flamingo, from the Dutch island of Curaçao. It’s all about seeing beauty in the familiar this week. The Cape glossy starling might be a commonplace sight, but there’s understated allure in that jewel-toned plumage! What’s more, insect-eating birds like starlings perform some important ecological services. New research shows the world's avian bug-munchers do some major pest control: they consume up to 500 million tonnes of insects a year! #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #birdsofinstagram #starling #capestarling #glossystarling #insectivores
After a swim at caracasbaai in Curaçao, Flamingo Bob demonstrated he is a true Caribbean flamingo as he posed in front of the bar where we parked the car. Good times! However, during my stay on the island we were stunned how much plastic waste is still to be found everywhere along the island. Fun to see they found a creative way here to bring it to our attention. One quelea, two quelea, three … thousand quelea! When it comes to summoning up a flock of cloud-sized proportions, few can match this little marvel. With over a billion breeding pairs out there, the red-billed quelea is thought to be the most abundant wild bird on the planet. Their penchant for seeds means these mega-swarms can have serious impacts on agriculture, but watching them all aflutter is certainly a Hitchcockian spectacle like no other!  #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #birdsofinstagram #redbilledquelea #queleas #weavers #flocks
I hope you enjoyed the weekend. When Flamingo Bob is not working with DVM Odette Doest @vetdoest on a wildlife education program he really enjoys his time around the house where Odette has built a salt water pool for the birds. When Bob and his buddy George hang out there on a Friday night it almost looked like a serious pool party. Special to be the pool together with these wildlife ambassadors. Among the bustard bunch you’ll find some of the heaviest flying birds around. The black-bellied bustard might not be the heftiest of its kin, but males can still reach close to three kilograms. Given that bulky build, it’s no wonder they prefer to keep those long, slender legs planted on the ground. Like other members of the family, the species is also known for its supremely quirky courtship display … drop us a comment if you’ve ever been lucky enough to see it!  #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #birdsofinstagram #bustards #blackbelliedbustard
Campers were able to discuss nutrition and diets with Zoo Keeper Shannon this morning during our Jr. Zoo Keeper Edventure. Shannon toured the campers around the zoo's commissary and gave them an inside look into feeding out to all the residents living in the Marie Osterbuhr Aviary. This week campers are learning the importance of every aspect of a Zoo Keeper's job from animal husbandry to conservation practices. #leerichardsonzoo #zookeeper #summercamp #conservation #education #yearofthebird2018
The grey-backed fiscal is a monochrome avian package that’s equal parts gutsy and gregarious. The birds embrace group living and noisily defend their territories from interlopers – putting on a gung-ho display from a prominent perch, with much beating of wings and fanning of tails. Like the rest of their shrike cousins, they’re skilled middleweight hunters who feast not just on insects but also on critters like small mammals. #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #shrikes #greybackedfiscal #birdsofinstagram #butcherbird

Bob seems to enjoy his weekly visit to Baoase Luxury Resort on the island of Curaçao. Whenever he can set foot in the ocean he is happy as relieves him from the pain caused by a chronic foot injury. He visits @baoase every weekend to teach the guests about conservation issues on the island of Curaçao. On Thursday-morning, Bob visits the A.E. Goiloschool in Julianadorp to teach the children about conservation issues on the island of Curaçao. Here Bob found his way to the school’s playground. By bringing Bob into these schools, DVM Odette Doest @vetdoest is able to teach the children about Bob's friends and relatives out in the wild and their fragile habitat that needs protection. The kids love Bob. They bring his story back home and spread the message among their friends. This way, Odette hopes to plant a seed for wildlife conservation within the next generation. Bob will be taking a break now that the schools are closing for a couple of weeks, but I’m sure he’ll be back after the summer break. Who you calling ugly? Africa’s hunched avian “undertakers” might not score points in the looks department, but they get full marks for awesome adaptations to life in the bush – like cooling their gangly legs with urine! And when it comes to food, anything goes: the big birds will happily gobble just about any critter they can swallow, or jostle vultures at the dinner-table to dip their beaks into tasty carrion. Marabou storks might not be pretty, but their clean-up services are pretty crucial for local ecosystems. #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #maraboustork #storks #scavengers #carrion

Charcoal underpants ✓ Neat grey cap ✓ Piercing orange iris ✓ 2 x dangling wattles ✓ Yes, it’s Africa’s odd-yet-stately, unmistakable wattled crane! Like the rest of their crane cousins around the globe, the monogamous birds can really bust a move, especially when breeding season rolls round. But more so than any other African species, their lifestyles revolve around water, and sadly, those precious wetland habitats are increasingly threatened by climate change, invasive species and human activity. #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #pelicans #cranes #wattledcranes #endangeredbirds #waterbirds #aquatic #wetlandbirds

Meet Bob, the Flamingo Ambassador of Curaçao. After flying into a hotel window, this flamingo was rescued by @vetdoest. During his recovery she discovered the flamingo had become habituated to humans early in his life and therefore couldn’t be released back into the wild. I snapped these shots in the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon just by seeing and hearing a few, then playing their calls out loud via my Merlin Bird ID app by @cornelllabpublishinggroup 🧚‍♀️ spring and early summer is a great time to try this lil trick because the birds are defending territories and respond to hearing their calls as if it is a bird interloping or challenging their territory. It’s one of the best strategies for seeing birds up close and observing behaviour. #2018yearofthebird #yearofthebird2018
We’re dipping into the life aquatic this week with the great white pelican. When you spend your days sampling the local piscine fare, you’d better come well equipped for fishing — and the pelicans’ impressive gular pouches certainly net plenty of food, while filtering out the water. Their short legs and squat bodies don’t make for a very elegant silhouette on land, but the sociable birds regain some spectacular stature as soon as they spread their wings to fly, often in formation with the rest of their feathered kin. #tweetaweek #yearofthebird2018 #twitching #birding #birdstagram #birdwatchers #birdlovers #pelicans #pelican #greatwhitepelican #whitepelican #waterbirds #aquatic
#WildlifeWednesday A Great Blue Heron catches a large rainbow trout on the Guadalupe River in Texas. Great Blue Herons have an average lifespan of about 15 years, with the oldest believed to be close to 23 years old. They are an integral part of coastal eco-systems, even as far inland as the Central Texas Hill Country. #yearofthebird #greatblueheron #texashillcountry
I’ve had a life long love affair with animals. Recently I became involved PAWS wildlife rescue. Finally I can use my talents to benefit something so near and dear to me- rescuing injured and orphaned animals! PAWS is a non-profit and depends solely on donations and the good hearts of volunteers. I’m donating 15% of the proceeds from every painting I sell from my Wildlife Collection in my Etsy Shop. This money will help but the food medicine and other supplies desperately needed to rehab these precious babies. Swipe through to see a few of the paintings already listed. The link to my Etsy shop is in my bio. If you have a wild animal you really love please tell me I’m the comments and I might just paint it! . . . . #wildliferescue #wildlife #wildlifelover #natureloverforlife #animallovers #birders #birdwatchers #birdlovers #birdsandblooms #birdsandbloomsmagazine #naturepaintings #natureloversofinstagram #art #rusticdecorating #savethebees #yearofthebird #yearofthebird2018
