I’ve been hoping to see a red fox in Yellowstone for twenty years! Finally blessed with an exciting encounter last week! This guy trotted right past me just 20 feet away. What a treat to see him so closely!
“Keep close to Nature’s heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” - John Muir
Our final few hours in the park, stopping for the last views of waterfalls and valley vistas. It’s so hard to leave such a magnificent place, but I know we’ll be back. #untilwemeetagain #ynp #myhappyplace #adventureswithben #optoutside #nationalpark
A Yosemite trip is long overdue! #YNP
Thank you to everyone who came to our 2nd speed mentoring! Speed mentoring pairs a mentor with one of our high school members, where they get to ask questions and gain insight into a career path for 10 minutes before switching to the next mentor. Our members really enjoyed hearing from all our mentors!
A huge THANK YOU to all our mentors: LT Dana Auten, LT Demetrius Stinson, Captain Daniel O’Sullivan, LT Harvey Hurst, Lisa Prosser, Captain Catherine Carrol, LT Nathan Jackson, LT Nathaniel Dennie, Monique Shay, Elaine Goodman, Mark Rodrick, SFC John Trevino, Mihaela Constantinescu, and Ulrike Hoff!
Don’t get too close!
Yeah, I hear that a lot. And it’s no wonder that people get gored by bison in Yellowstone Park each year. They look about as docile as you can imagine. Take this guy for example. We found him grazing alone along the Firehole River early one morning. With no tourists around to agitate, and with the foggy mist and water trickling over the rocks, it was about as peaceful of a scene as you could imagine. I stood next to him for some time, taking a few pics here and there, but really, I just took in the moment. It was all too easy to get lulled into complacency - and I did. I felt no danger. However, in Yellowstone, it’s hard to keep a secret, and soon several cars showed up after seeing us pulled over to the side. It wasn’t long before 10 people were out of their cars, armed with their selfie sticks, and began surrounding him. The energy changed. My bison buddy wasn’t happy any longer. And honestly, I don’t know how this story ends — because I left. But, this is exactly how people wind up gored.
Do visit the bison of Yellowstone, but please don’t be a tourist.
Bonus! Fun fact of the day: Yellowstone Park is the only place in the United States that has had a continuous herd of bison since prehistoric times — and as far as I know, it is the last herd of bison that hasn’t been interbred with cattle.
