Prince Gautama, who had become Buddha, saw an old pious worshipper sitting under a peepul tree at the edge of the holy river. Upon inquiry as to why he was disconsolate, the man said he wanted to know if there was a god before he died. Buddha , who had been silent on this question before gave said: “ No ".
