Day 3 of #intothedepths with @butiyoga is all about the concept of emotional homeostasis. What were the emotions we experienced most often as a child, how did they feel, and once we understand those emotions how are they playing a role our current self. ✨Anger. Anger and more anger. This is the emotion I felt most as a child. It was always there. I didn’t get what I wanted, anger. I was told to do something, anger. I was left alone, anger. Always. It made me sick, it stopped me from sleeping, it made me live in a constant state of fight or flight. And I have no idea why. Looking back I see where it ate parts of my life away. Being angry at people, places, things. I see how it tainted my childhood. I would just get so mad and then hope I got my way solely because no one should want me to be mad. As an adult, I let this continue. Anything that didn’t go my way. I get mad. I get irrationally angry. I’ve slowly learned to control it. Seeing it as not serving. As a leech to my happiness. DAY THREE: As a child I felt extremely loved and supported; I remember lots of family gatherings and memories made. It wasn’t until middle school that I actually began to struggle making genuine friendships and connections- I had a hard time fitting in. I pretended to be things I wasn’t, I acted and lashed out, it was the first time I had ever been in a physical altercation...it was also the first time I had my life threatened. I remember not caring much about going to a different school because that meant making new friends. I unknowingly carried these wounds with me to high school - I continued making a few poor choices and by no means did I struggle academically, but I also believe I probably released a lot of traumatic energy through sports at that time in my life. I felt labeled “THAT girl”, “the girl who...” I can almost feel the immense shame, guilt, betrayal, embarrassment, sadness, grief, and loneliness looking back. I can see her, that scared, brave little girl- and I wish I could hug her and hold her. I, of course, went through more bad and regretful decisions after high school, and a couple more life-threatening experiences that has eventually brought me here today. It wasn’t until late 2014 when I found yoga. I learned it was so much more than a practice to me...it was healing me. I found myself sobbing or nervously giggling on my mat and I soon found out we could release stuck energy and emotions in the body: “the issues live in our tissues”. I now realize why I do the things I do, my habits, beliefs, and values, and I move through life with much more intention and mindfulness than before. Yoga has me identifying underlying issues and bringing up memories and resurfacing things I thought were long gone. What I didn’t mention is how many good choices I have made in the past up to today; Choices of compassion, love, kindness...truly because I made the choice to take the path and heal instead of suffer and project my suffering onto others. Standing Forward Bend Pose I first saw Standing Forward Bend Pose (Uttanasana) when I was in Junior Secondary School and it was performed by a Senior. Then, I thought the Senior was a Robot... Haha SFB is great for weight loss and general body mentainace. - It is a yoga pose that could stretch the hips, hamstrings and calves. - It may tone and strengthen the legs - Since it involves a bend of the upper body, it could help boost good flow of oxygen in the brain cells. - It may enhance spine strength and flexibility. - It could relieve tension, anxiety, depression and fatigue. - It activates the abdominal muscles and may improve digestion. - It could energize they liver, kidney and prostrate glance. - It may be therapeutic for insomnia, asthma and osteoporosis. - Good posture and activeness could be improved. - It may promote composure. - It is suitable for everyone, though people with back and knee injury could find SFB very challenging. - It could help you lose weight.
